  2. Basic Anatomy An ants body has three parts, the head, the thorax and the abdomen. On an ants head there is two antennas. An ant uses its antennas for different things such as touching, tasting and smelling. Ants have a narrow waist between their thorax and their abdomen, they also have three pairs of legs.

  3. Life Cycle Ants live for a long time .Workers usually live for about a year, but most ants can live for five years. Black ant queens can live for the longest, they live for about fifteen – twenty years. One ant queen lived in a German laboratory for twenty-nine years! Picture of life cycle on next slide

  4. Habitats Ants live in colonies of different sizes, some are really small and some are huge. A colony of black ant contains about four thousand ants, but a wood ant colony would have about three hundred thousand or more ants in it. some colonies have millions of ants! Pictures of ant colonies on next slide

  5. ANT COLONIES!

  6. Global Presence Ants are nearly everywhere in the world but they don’t live in countries like Greenland , Iceland and Antarctica because that is where the weather is always cold, they cant live in those type of countries because they will not survive for long. Ants are mostly found around Europe and Asia.

  7. Adaptive and Defensive Adaptive: Ants have been able to live for millions of years because they have been able to adapt to all kinds of conditions. Different types of ants might look the same and they also might live in the same colonies, but did you know that they eat differently , get food differently and where and how they nest is also different . Ants sometimes go in different colonies based on these lifestyle differences. Defensive: Only female ants have an organ called ‘ovipositor’ at the tip of their abdomen. It is specially designed for laying eggs, but it is also a stinger. No male ants have an ovipositor, but some kinds of ants put poison with their bites. Other ants spray a bad smelling liquid on their enemies.

  8. armadillo Giant anteater Pangolin Honeydew Tiny worms Tiny spiders

  9. Role in the Environment Some ants can help the environment by destroying unwanted plants, they don’t eat it but they bite it off and take it to their nests. Ants help the environment because they clean up the dead bodies of otherinsects.

  10. local species Here are some ant species: • Army ants • Fire ants • Bullet ants • Lemon ants • Weaver ants • Bulldog ants • Leaf-cutter ants • Honey-pot ants • Argentine ants

  11. LOCAL SPECIES

  12. Harmful and Beneficial HARMFUL: Ants can go into your home and wreak your food , especially sweet food. There are types of ants that bite poison , such as the bullet ant, they say when you get bit by a bullet ant that it feels like you just got hit by a bullet!

  13. Harmful and Beneficial BENEFICIAL: Some ants like the garden ants are not harmful at all because they do not have stingers. Ants can stop pests by coming to your house because ants sometimes feed on them.

  14. Unique Ant Facts 1. Pharaoh ants so small that one hundred thousand of them wouldn’t even weigh a paperclip! 2. Desert ants can live can live on hot sand that can reach up to 70 degrees! they wouldn't be able to survive in countries that are always cold. 3. Ants are so old that they have been alive since the dinosaurs were here!

  15. DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that ants never sleep ! When a queen dies in a colony the other ants that were in her colony die because when a queen dies there are no new workers born! A brain of a ant has about 250,000 brain cells in it. Did you know that the sense of smell of an ant is the same as a dogs sense of smell!!
