  1. Santiago and Manolin; Archetypes used in literature

  2. The Relationship: GOOD! • Santiago and Manolin are there for each other. • They help each other. Manolin carries things for Santiago, and he gets him food, or tucks him in for rest when he gets back from big fishing trips. Also, Manolin doesn’t care what other people think about Santiago, because he’s his friend. Just because people say the old man is unlucky, doesn’t mean Manolin is going to stop having faith in him, and that’s a sign of a good friend. • Santiago helps Manolin make wise decisions, and obey his parents. He also loves the boy, and misses him when he goes on big fishing trips without him.

  3. Who’s Who? • Santiago is older and wiser than Manolin and he makes sure that when Manolin is making a decision, that he’s making the correct one. I think that Santiago is the mentor and Manolin is the learner. When they’re talking about baseball, Santiago tells Manolin what he thinks will happen, and what probably will happen, because he’s definitely seen more.

  4. How Does It Relate? • This book, The Old Man and the Sea, relates to a lot of books, but especially The Giving Tree. The tree is the mentor and the boy is the learner. • The tree teaches the boy. • The tree gives the boy all he can, although it’s not always sufficient. • The boy always becomes more successful thanks to the tree.

  5. How This Book Relates To My Life The Old Man and the Sea My Life • An old man on a ship constantly fights a fish that’s pulling him into deeper waters. Finally, he defeats the fish and takes it home to celebrate, only to have it eaten by sharks before he can arrive. His friend helps him through this hard time, and supports him, bringing him food and putting him to bed, always standing by his side. • I constantly fight going into deeper waters of life, being dragged by friends. I always have to get rid of the fish (my friends), and start swimming again, just to get pulled back out. Sometimes, even sharks are involved, eating any prize that I win (causing me to be unstable). My family are always here for me though, through the good times and the bad.
