  1. Pike Middle School 8th Grade Registration 2014-2015

  2. What is different from 7th grade? • Your course selections will have a huge bearing on the track you will take for high school • You do not have to have P.E. or athletics • You will have 4 electives • You can start earning high school credit

  3. What is important to consider? • You need to take a challenging curriculum to help you become college ready • If you take some high school credit classes as an 8th grader, then you will have more spots in high school for things like an academy, sports, and other electives • Algebra I and Spanish I grades are factored in your high school GPA

  4. How do I choose my classes? • All pre-AP courses require a parent signature • Language Arts: -Signatures are required for GT and Pre-AP -Summer reading is required for Pre-AP & GT Language Arts • Math: -8th grade Algebra I math pathway is continued from 7th grade Pre-AP math

  5. Athletics • A physical is required in order to participate each year • You MUST get Coach Shilling or Coach King’s signature to get into 8th grade Athletics • You can try out for any competitive sports, but must try out for at least two: • Boys: football, basketball, cross country, track, tennis and soccer. • Girls: volleyball, basketball, cross country, track, tennis and soccer. • You will participate in off season if you are not on a competitive sports team.

  6. High school elective information • Communication Applications (Speech) is required for all students to graduate high school • If you register for Comm. Appl., then you have to register for Health because each class is only 1 semester long • It is HIGHLY recommended to take Comm Apps/Health as an 8th grader • Most students are required to have 2 foreign language credits to graduate so you can enroll in Spanish I at Pike then you will only have to take one more year at the high school

  7. Electives Continued • You can choose 4 electives as an 8th grader – on your registration form you need to # your choices, i.e. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 & 8 in the order of your preference – 1 being your top choice • You will need approval for: Athletics, One Act Play, Choir, Band, and Orchestra.

  8. Applications Are Required • If you are interested in PeerMediation, you will need to fill out an application, and to get a letter of recommendation from someone who is not a current teacher or your parent • You must also fill out an application for: -yearbook -media tech -office -counselor -library aide

  9. Finally… • Registration forms must have appropriate signatures on March 28th. • All registration forms and applications (peer mediator, counselor, office aide, etc.) need to be turned in by March 28th.
