Exploring Still Life: A Journey Through Art and Personal Connection

Still life, a genre of art featuring inanimate objects, allows artists the freedom to arrange elements creatively. Originating from the Middle Ages and flourishing through various art movements, still life has evolved significantly, from natural subjects like flowers in the 19th century to abstract expressions in the 20th and the innovative use of technology in the 21st. This week's assignment prompts you to select personal man-made objects, reflect on their significance, and create pencil sketches followed by colored artwork outdoors, fostering a deeper appreciation for this art form.

  1. Still Life Section Mr. Green

  2. What exactly is Still Life? • A work of art depicting mostly inanimate objects • Of these objects, they are either Natural (food, flowers, plants) or Man-Made (Jewelry, glasses, vases, coins, books, and so on)

  3. Origins • Originating from the Middle Ages and Roman/Greek Art, still life gives the artist more leeway in the arrangement of design elements than portraits and landscapes

  4. Time Periods- 19th Century • Many great artists from the Neo-classical time period included still life in their works • Main subjects natural- such as flowers

  5. 20th Century • The first four decades of the 20th century formed an exceptional period of artistic ferment and revolution. Avant-garde movements rapidly evolved and overlapped in a march towards nonfigurative, total abstraction

  6. 21st Century • still life has expanded beyond the boundary of a frame • Computer-generated graphics have expanded the techniques available to still life artists. With the use of the video camera, still life artists can even incorporate the viewer into their work

  7. Instructions for today with schedule of next week Today: Think of a list of 3-5 objects that are man made from your home. Write them down on a separate piece of paper. After writing them down, please write a paragraph for each object explaining its importance to you. Make sure you can bring these items with you on Monday and Tuesday because these will be our focal points for our still life Monday: We will create a rough PENCIL BASED sketch of our man-made objects outside (depending on weather). While doing this, you will be given a chart that will need to be filled out that will go along with this project for Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday: We will be back outside (depending on weather) to COLOR your piece. This assignment is meant to take up the FULL TWO DAYS. Work patiently and give 110%.
