  2. Illinois

  3. Two University Campuses About 1.5 hour drive between campuses

  4. The Team Keith Miller and Larry Dale at University of Illinois at Springfield Marsha Woodbury and Tony Suttle at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

  5. The Challenge • Teach a course on two campuses at the same time • Even though the semester dates are different • Do everything in a rush, since the approval was last-minute

  6. Nuts and Bolts • Limited windows of opportunity between Springfield and Urbana-Champaign • Settled on a Thursday at 1:30 p.m.-- • Better for UIUC than UIS • Order books, advertise the course

  7. Living with the Beast

  8. Virtual Classroom Interface

  9. Active Chat Space

  10. The VCI for Web Interactions • Easy to set up • Easy to learn • Incompatible with Sun workstations • Welcome to “North of Green” • Archiving a real problem • Students couldn’t add their own hot links

  11. The VCI for Web Interactions • Password-protection on the whole site

  12. The University of Illinois Library for carting books • All texts ordered through the UIUC Bookstore • Shipped over to Springfield on the 2 p.m. library shuttle

  13. UIUC students had superior facilities

  14. Name tags and paper solutions • How can students at different sites meet each other • Name tags • Web • Presentations • “Elmo” the life saver • “Chalk talks” • When a problem, “We can’t hear you”

  15. Compressed TV • Technician was a great help • Keith Miller had to do it all • Once from a wheelchair • Link began at Lincoln Hall • Once we lost our connection late in the hour

  16. Life before NetMeeting • Presentations -- an approach that works well • Controlling the presentation at both venues • Setting it up took time every week

  17. Students longed for face-to-face • Pizza night at the end • Teachers each spent a day at the other’s campus • Coffee breaks together meant a lot

  18. Conclusions • UIS students seemed at a technological disadvantage • Definitely worth repeating • Outside experts made it even more enriching--the strength of on-line connections

  19. Conclusions A favorite class for many Stimulating, even with the delays at the beginning
