Terms • Alliteration: the repetition of consonant sounds • Analogy: a comparison between two unlike things, a type of imagery • Assonance: the repetition of vowel sounds • Carpe Diem: Latin saying which means “seize the day” • Connotation: subtle undertones that add meaning to words • Denotation: the dictionary meaning of a word • Diction: word choice • Enjambment: when a poet ends a line in the middle of a thought and continues to the next line

Terms • Foot: one set of metrical pattern, consisting of one • stressed and syllable and one or more • unstressed syllables • Imagery: the collection of images in a poem and may • be present in many forms • Metaphor: comparisons that do not use the words • “like” or “as” • Meter: a poem’s general patter of rhythm • Onomatopoeia: when words resemble the sounds • they are portraying

Terms • Personification: the attribution of human • characteristics to animals or • inanimate objects • Scan: the marking of a poem’s metrical scheme • Sibilant Sound: the repetition of the s, z, or sh sounds • Simile: comparisons that use the words “like” or “as” • Slant Rhyme: when the rhyme of two or more words is • close, but not exact • Stanza: a group of lines that are separated by a blank • line • True Rhyme: when the rhyme of two or more words is • exact
