Louisiana Revised Statute 17:281(Permitted Courses of Study) • School board must have a committee to review sex education curriculum and content; must have a parent on committee • No contraceptive or abortion device shall be distributed at school • Parents can opt out • Prohibits students from being quizzed, tested or surveyed about their personal or family beliefs or practices in sex, morality or religion

  9. Are Louisiana Laws and Policies Effective?

STD rates in Louisiana are among the highest in the nation. • The highest (1st ) Primary and Secondary Syphilis rate in the nation in 2007: 12.4 cases per 100,000; 533 cases total (an increase from 7.6 cases per 100,000; 342 cases total in 2006.) In 2008, Primary and Secondary Syphilis cases reported in Louisiana increased to 707. • The highest (1st ) Congenital Syphilis rate in the nation in 2007: 55.1 per 100,000 Live Births. In 2008, Primary and Secondary Syphilis cases reported in Louisiana decreased to 26. • 2nd highest Gonorrhea rate in the nation in 2007: 259.7 cases per 100,000; 11,137 cases total. (an increase from 240.6 cases per 100,000; 10,883 cases total in 2006.) In 2008, Gonorrhea cases reported in Louisiana decreased to 9,455. • 7th highest Chlamydia rate in the nation in 2007: 451.6 cases per 100,000; 19,362 cases total (an increase from 395.4 cases per 100,000: 17,885 cases in 2006.) In 2008, Chlamydia cases reported in Louisiana increased to 22,659.
