  1. Tempus ProjectQuality in Research 10 and 11September 2012. godine, State University of Novi Pazar

  2. Topic: PHD DISSERTATION: TRAINING, PRACTICES AND QUALITYSTANDARDS

  3. Doctoral dissertation? The mission of PhD studies is securing of a primary role of a science through acquiring new knowledge at the universities, being gained through: • Development and improvement of research potentials, • Formation of teaching personnel for higher education, • Formation of eminent experts for all areas. In this way, it is being easier to contribute to: • General development of knowledge, • Scientific and technological development, • Improvement of cultural identity and preservation of a national identity.

  4. Doctoral dissertation? PhD studies are a long-term investment in the function to create trained researchers from students, especially those highly talented ones, for the works demanding the highest level of knowledge and skills. The vision of development of PhD studies is: • Development of a society based on knowledge, • Realisation of general and specific strategic determinations of each country, being based on an improved research potential, and the one is gained through PhD studies.

  5. Doctoral dissertation? • The institutions that organise PhD studies are responsible for the quality of the ones, and the quality is determined based on the standards of EU, and also improvement of CAQA PhD studies. • Based on the previously stated, it is necessary for the scientific and artistic values of PhD studies to satisfy standards, both national and international ones.

  6. Doctoral dissertation? Each doctoral dissertation should provide through its scientific contribution: • The primary role of science at the university • Research potential • The establishment of university teaching staff • The doctoral dissertationshould describe and solve not a particular problem or a subproblem in this or that field or theory, but to provide the results that open a new branch in a theory, solve the problems of a wide research direction • It is really difficult to carry out a research on such a level without having a strong research experience

  7. Doctoral dissertation? • Faculties and universities that implement doctoral studies, more precisely, promote PhDs are responsible for the quality of doctoral dissertations • The quality of the doctoral dissertation is reflected through the quality of doctoral studies and EU standards, and improved self-evaluation and accreditation standards of doctoral studies

  8. Doctoral dissertation ... The quality of each dissertation is based on the developed indicators: • The adoption of professional ethics • Raising of awareness and responsibility of scientists to the values of humanism and the environment Scientific (artistic) value of each dissertation must meet established standards at the national and international level: • Each has an original doctoral dissertation research (artistic) contribute positively evaluated by independent national (international) scientists in the field of doctoral dissertations.

  9. Doctoral dissertation ... • For some fields the results of the research must be implemented, tested and verified in a legal entity – a private company, university, production plant • An example of such a situation could be a thesis on the engineering sciences that develops a new production technology • The technology should be implemented on a production facility, tested and the results should conclude that it works better in reality

  10. Doctoral dissertation ... The aim is that the doctoral dissertation includes: • standard compliance regarding the outcome of a doctoral dissertation • international reviews (rates) when the doctoral thesis is in English, or engage famous scientists (of the same origin) from the diaspora • Introduce a register of doctoral dissertations • Competence of mentors and committee members • Results and contribution of the doctoral dissertation present in public before the defense in the journals from SCI, SSCI lists and quotation • A doctoral dissertation published in electronic form (obligatory)

  11. Doctoral dissertation ... • Experience of the Balkan region is that there is a negligible number of doctoral study programs with an interdisciplinary outcome which educates graduates DAS for the wider labor market, not only for a research of a narrow scientific field

  12. Doctoral dissertation... It is therefore necessary for doctoral studies to be recognized at the labor market: • The development of study programs DAS fast connection with the labor market. • All sectors should reflect the need for the doctors of science. • Conduct research across all doctoral research project, preferably international. • Establish a connection with the institutions and successful institutions, to facilitate practical training and practices of each PhD student.

  13. Doctoral dissertation... • Posts for the highest qualification covered by PhDs should be provided not only in higher education but also in scientific research and cultural institutions and companies. At these positions, DAS students could find their place for conduction of successful training and practice • Also, clearly identified tasks in the public sector demand the highest level of knowledge and skills. A successful training and practice of DAS students could be carried out at these positions • Accredited PhD study programs should be supported by relevant institutions, companies and governmental bodies that will provide training and practice for related areas and disciplines

  14. Conclusions • Defining the goal of PhD studies in sense of differing between science and strict professional expertise • Necessity of defining certain common disciplines for different fields of PhS studies • Aplicability of results obtained trough PhD studies’ process • Obtained results must either open a new branch in the theory, or solve the problems of wide research direction
