  1. Why not Wiki? Using Wikis for interactive learning

  2. Imagine if, in your classroom • You could project a page onto your board • And your students could all edit that page, make changes and improve it • And they could post work to that page from home or anywhere • And you could have slides, video, pictures, Power Points and podcasts linked on that page • And you could load Hot Potatoes exercises there or work in Inspiration • You could add cool add ons such as translators, weather forecasts, calendars • And you could type in Japanese script!!!

  3. Welcome to Wikis PBWiki www.pbwiki.com Easy as making a Peanut Butter sandwich

  4. What is a wiki? • A wiki is an easy to use webpage which multiple people can edit. • It is easy to use • You can set up a wiki at several sites free PBwiki, Wikispaces • (For additional storage space you will have to upgrade and pay a small amount e.g.$10.00)

  5. Basic uses • Set up your classes and list all NCEA standards for easy reference and update changes regularly. • Set up group projects and let your students collaborate. They can make a combined webpage or write a co-operative story/choose your own adventure STPIERRE1/Match de soccer.doc • Ask students to correct/ add to, or comment on others work

  6. How can I use a class WIKI

  7. Get students to post their work • Not time/place dependent. Can be posted from anywhere. • Teachers can correct, or add comments. STPIERRE1/Tasks Me Voila.doc • All drafts are kept till deleted so we can go back and see • A comparison tool makes comparing versions simple. • The wiki page can be retrieved at any time for individual conferencing or for group discussion.

  8. Why is a wiki better then a blog • It is interactive and can be accessed by all the computers in the room (or in other rooms) • If you to send some students to different rooms to get computer access you can still all be on the same page at the same time • Get students to post work on the wiki and correct it there • Use it as a portfolio tool for students to showcase work then with one click create an online slideshow to demo their work.STPIERRE1/Moimeme.htm

  9. How can you use a Wiki as an Interactive Blackboard? (1) Using a data projector and your laptop you can: • Correct student work in front of students. • Get group discussion going on work posted. • STPIERRE1/Etre en Forme1 • Get students to work interactively provided that are seated at a computer. (A short time lag between each student editing allows time for class discussion on what is posted)

  10. How can you use a Wiki as an Interactive Blackboard? (2) • You can link to URLS • You can link to Blogs www.blogger.com • You can link to Podcasts www.edgewater.podomatic.com • You can link to Teachertube All on your own WIKI site

  11. Who controls the content? • You can make your wiki public or private • You can decide to give full access or read only access. • To allow others to edit you must invite them in (email is sent) and give them the password • Whoever has the password to the wiki can edit it • As administrator you are advised whenever one of your students edits the wiki so you can see who is working

  12. You can see who has edited and how much they have contributed •  3.9 k Daniel Clist Wed, 5:52 pm[PBwiki] stpierre: La Sante edited2007 • 6.4 k james butler Tue, 9:31 pm[PBwiki] stpierre: La Sante edited • 5.3 kThomas Masters Tue, 8:14 pm[PBwiki] stpierre: La Sante edited • 4.2 k mubels Mon, 3:12 pm[PBwiki] stpierre: FrontPage

  13. Follow up.-can be by private email reponse to individuals • Hi Robert ;You have signed into the wiki but I don't see any changes.Did you find any mistakes? It is helpful for your own accuracy if you can see the errors and correct them. If you can't find any mistakes, you can add some better sentences. Jumac • To jumac; i have infact made some changes to stefans essay. as i am in group 1, he is the person at which i was to correct. i made my corrections in dark blue. Thank you for your concern and help towards my classes french scores From: rob • To:  "Robert Hill" Thank you Rob-I obviously made an error and you have corrected a couple of things. Apologies. The one I hoped you you would see at once was "travailler“ {to work} en voiture instead of "aller en voiture" to go by car/travel by car. Bon courage Jumac

  14. What if a student writes something inappropriate? • You have all drafts so you can go back and return to previous versonand delete the unsuitable one

  15. Peer Pressure and comments • Awesome BUTZ Praminda fernando • good stuff butz Anonymous • Pretty average m8. u cud do better.Anonymous • Uneed to put other stuff like what your girlfreinds look likeLouis Scott • Very goodbernard • Cant find stefan's essayleeeumwheres abbos essay. CUMMON ABBO • Bonsoir: You're doing well. It is really good to see you interacting and correcting each other's work. One of the best ways to learn accuracy is to correct another person's work. Also, because your work remains on the wiki you can look back on your work and see if you keep repeating the same mistakes. You can also use your wiki pages for revision before exams. Bon courage (professeur)jumac

  16. Flexibility of editing on PB wiki • PB wiki is superior to some other sites due to good Point and Click editor allowing different fonts and colours • You can add clip art • You can add photos-e.g. school tripSTPIERRE1/Nous Allons en France.doc • You can access video • You can access a Power point

  17. More features • You can insert exercises in Hot Potatoes • You can link to Inspiration • You can type in Japanese fonts –no problem • You can download webpages or links • You can add google tool such as a translator or a weather forecast.

  18. Best of all • You can add YAKPAK chat • This allows up to twenty-two people to chat free on the Wiki • The person who depresses controls the speech and as soon as the mouse is released the next person can take a turn. • Ideal for international language communication

  19. Some other ideas • WELL IF THIS WAS A REAL WIKI AND YOU HAD THE PASSWORD • YOU COULD BE TYPING your questions IN HERE RIGHT NOW~~!! • Check these sites www.pbwiki.com www.wikispaces.com http://international-writing-exchange.wikispaces. http://lizzy.iit.nrc.ca/CyberClub/public/wiki.cgi FIN

  20. One of you will go into the draw for a Gold PB Wiki with big space! Up and coming: New Caledonia resource “Polyglot”
