  19. The Characters Who is the story about? These are the characters of the story. They can be people, animals, or other creatures. There may be many characters in a story. However, there usually are at least two characters that have a conflict between them. These two characters are known as the main characters. One is called the protagonist and one is called the antagonist.

  20. Who is the protagonist? The main character that the story centers around.

  21. Who is the antagonist? The person that opposes the main character.

  22. Theme The theme is the central idea or message in the story. Short stories often have just one theme, whereas novels usually have multiple themes. The theme of a story is woven all the way through the story, and the characters' actions, interactions, and motivations all reflect the story's theme.
