  4. Curriculum You can access all of 5th grade curriculum by going on to the CUSD website under the Curriculum tab.

  5. Reading • New reading textbook: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt • Emphasis on fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension strategies with a variety of texts • Leveled Readers to help students read and comprehend stories at their instructional level while working on various reading strategies.

  6. Accelerated Reading (AR) • Students STAR test every quarter to receive their reading range. • Goals are based on 35 minutes of independent reading per night • Students are given a calendar that explains what percentage of their goal they should be at on that particular date. • Reading logs are to be signed nightly

  7. Writing 1st Quarter will focus on Narrative and Informative Writing 6 Traits of Writing Ideas and Content Organization Voice Sentence Fluency Word Choice Conventions

  8. Spelling • Weekly list of 20 basic words and 5 challenge words • Spelling tests every Thursday • Words can be practiced using spellingcity.com

  9. Math • Solidify multiplication and division process • Compare and order fractions, decimals and percents • Collect and analyze data • Measurement – perimeter and area • Geometry • Elapsed time • Integers (positive and negative) • Add and subtract decimals and fractions • Order of operations

  10. SocialStudies • Exploration • Colonization • American Revolution • Constitution • Westward Expansion • Civil War

  11. Science • Matter • Motion and Forces and Simple Machines • Body Systems – skeletal, muscular • Science Fair • Natural Hazards • Planets • Space Exploration

  12. Homework • Fifth graders in CUSD are expected to do 30 – 50 minutes of homework a day (Monday – Thursday) • Please check your child’s agenda daily - homework should be written in the agenda • Late homework may result in the loss of PRIDE letter (5 minutes of recess for each letter lost)

GradedWork • Graded work will be sent home on Mondays • Parent signature required weekly • Infinite Campus – online gradebook • Classwork or homework that receives a grade below 70% can be turned in with corrections by the end of the week for additional credit. New grade will not exceed 70% • Quiz or test grades that receive a grade below 50% must be corrected and turned back in to receive additional credit.

  14. School-wide Discipline Plan CONSEQUENCES FOR MINOR MISCONDUCT • Loss of recess • Phone contact or note to parent • Student Improvement Plan • Time out in another room

School-wide Discipline Plan CONSEQUENCES FOR MAJOR MISCONDUCT • Any that apply to minor misconduct • Lunch detention in classroom • After school detention in the classroom • ½ Day ISS (In School Suspension) in another classroom arranged by the teacher • Full Day ISS in another classroom arranged by the teacher • OSS (Off School Suspension) arranged by the principal

  16. Classroom Management/Discipline System • PRIDE Cards – Loss of a letter means loss of 5 minutes of Fun Friday recess. P R I D E

  17. School-wide Communication • Patterson Press • Patterson Post (sent by e-mail twice a month) “Perfect for Posting on the refrigerator”

  18. CEF Chandler Education Foundation or 100% Awareness • Fundraising campaign from Aug. 11 – 22 • Raises $$$ for district grants, scholarships, etc. • We are trying to raise $1.00 or more per student for 100% participation

  19. Reminders • No students on campus before 8:10 AM. • Parents – please return required parent signature pages. • Student cell phones should be off and in backpacks. This includes on the bus and waiting in parent pick up. • Tax Credit Donations are greatly appreciated
