  2. Ecology • What is Ecology? Ecology looks at living things and the environments that they inhabit

  3. Ecosystem • What is an Ecosystem? A smaller self contained environment such as a forest, lake, or stream Includes its own set of plants and animals, and local conditions such as temperature, wind, and rain.

  4. Food Chains • What is a Food Chain? A series of event in which one organism eats another and obtains energy

  5. Food Webs • What is a Food Web? A Food Web consists of the many overlapping food chains in an ecosystem

  6. Biomes • What is a Biome? A Biome is a group of ecosystems with similar climates and organism.

  7. Biomes • Classifying ecosystems into biomes helps ecologists describe the world. • It is mostly the climate conditions (temperature and rainfall) that determine an areas biome.

  8. Types of Biomes • Ecologists do not all agree on the exact number and kinds of biomes. • 8-10 • Six major land biomes • Two major water biomes • Sometimes Mountains and Ice will be considered biomes

  9. Six major Land Biomes • Rain Forest Biomes - Tropical Rain Forest - Temperate Rain Forest • Desert Biomes • Grassland Biomes • Deciduous Forest Biomes • Boreal Forest Biomes • Tundra Biomes

  10. Two major Water Biomes • Freshwater Biomes - Ponds and Lakes - Streams and Rivers • Marine Biomes - Estuaries - Intertidal Zone - Neritic Zone - Surface Zone - Deep Zone
