  3. Esther- historical romance of Esther and her husband the king Mordecai- Esther’s uncle and leader of Jews Haman- jealous of Jews and convinced king to kill all Jews Esther saved Jews- feast of Purim

  4. Storytelling- symbolism Providence- God’s constant care and protection Tobit- Ninevah- financial losses sent his son, Tobiah, to collect money owed him Sarah- 7 husbands had died Raphael – angel who helped Tobit, Tobiah, and Sarah Judith- saved Jews from Assyrians by killing the commander after he drank too much and was asleep

Groups of Jews • Hellenistic- they accepted everything Greek • Hasidism- remained pious and true to old ways • Maccabees – family who fought for Jewish rights • Judas- rededicated the Temple • Oil lasted for 8 days instead of 1– feast of Hanukkah • Jonathan and Simon also lead the Jews to freedom • Maccabees showed providence of God and heroism and diplomacy saved the Jewish people

  6. Jonah- parable- refused to go to Ninevah to be a prophet. Tried to escape from God on boat, ended up being thrown overboard and swallowed by whale. Symbolism- 3 days and coming back to life- like the Resurrection of Christ Examples of Parables-Good Samaritan, Prodigal son, Loaves and fishes, mustard seed, lost sheep and shepherd

  7. After Simon died, John became king and High Priest This resulted in fighting among the Hasidic Jews. Groups of Hasidic Jews

  8. After the Jewish people began to fight among themselves, the Romans decided to attack. Pompey the Great invaded and took over Judea. Romans rule was chaotic for next 33 years Eventually, Rome appointed Herod ruler of Judea. Herod was more concerned with surviving and getting more power than in helping his fellow Jews. Herod put to death anyone who disagreed with him- including members of his family. Herod imposed heavy taxes on Jewish people.
