  1. Why We Serve God (Romans 7; 1 Jn. 3)

  2. One Can Be Assured They Are Saved • (Hebrews 3:14) For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, (NKJV) • (2 Corinthians 13:5) Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? --unless indeed you are disqualified. (NKJV) • (1 John 3:21) Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. (NKJV)

  3. “I have kept the law of Christ!”(Am I saved?) • Heard • Believed • Repented • Confessed • Baptized • Tried to live faithfully • Assembled • Lord’s Supper • Attend Bible-believing congregation • …that spends its money right • …that is non-institutional • …that worships according to the N.T. pattern • Etc., etc., etc. Yet, at times I STILL SIN!

  4. The “Problematic” Text • (1 John 3:6-9) • Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. (NKJV)

  5. Man Cannot be Saved by Law-Keeping • (Matthew 23:23) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. (NKJV)

  6. An Problem With Motives • (Mark 7:6) He answered and said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. (NKJV)

  7. Man Cannot be Saved by Law-Keeping • (Galatians 5:1-4) Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with ayoke of bondage. Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. (NKJV)

  8. Again, a Problem With Motives • (1 John 3:18) My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. (NKJV)

  9. The “Salvation by Law-Keeping” Mentality • …Negates Grace: • charis, (khar'-ece): “a kindness of a master towards his inferiors or servants, and so esp. of God towards men…Moreover…contains the idea of kindness which bestows upon one which he has not deserved” – Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, pg. 665 • (Ephesians 2:8) For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, (NKJV)

  10. The “Salvation by Law-Keeping” Mentality • Comprehending God’s Grace: • (Romans 5:8) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (NKJV)

  11. The “Salvation by Law-Keeping” Mentality • “…I can do it myself”: A Hopeless Struggle • Rom. 7:13-24

  12. The Function of the Law • To Relay God’s Commands • (Romans 7:12) Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. (NKJV)

  13. The Purpose of the Law • To Tell Us When We Are Lost • (Romans 7:7-11) What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, "You shall not covet." But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead. I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me. (NKJV)

  14. Man’s Only Hope For Overcoming Sin: • (Romans 7:25) I thank God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. (NKJV)

  15. Losing Focus On God ALWAYS Precedes Sin • (Matthew 5:28) "But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (NKJV) • (Matthew 6:33) "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. (NKJV)

  16. Man’s Only Hope For Overcoming Sin: • (Philippians 4:8) Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things. (NKJV)

  17. We do not obey God In Order To Be Saved, We Obey Him Because We Are Saved • (1 John 2:5) But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. (NKJV)

  18. We do not obey God In Order To Be Saved, We Obey Him Because We Are Saved • (James 2:17-26) • Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. (NKJV)

  19. We do not obey God In Order To Be Saved, We Obey Him Because We Are Saved • (1 John 3:3) • And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. (NKJV)

  20. Jesus, Our Example • (1 John 5:1-4) Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith. (NKJV)

  21. Jesus, Our Example in Attitude • (Matthew 26:39) • He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." (NKJV) • (1 John 5:8) And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one. (NKJV)

  22. Those Saved Find Sin Unthinkable! • (1 John 3:20) For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. (NKJV) • (1 John 3:24) Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. (NKJV)
