  1. ECOLOGICAL SUCCESSION… … A NEW BEGINNING. A.Cook 2008 Work Cited: (click here)

  2. ECOLOGICAL SUCCESSION Ecological successionis defined as gradual changes of species that live in an area over time. There are two types of ecological succession: • Primary Succession • Secondary Succession (click on one of the above to learn more)

  3. PRIMARY SUCCESSION

  4. Primary Succession occurs in places where there is no ___________. Some reasons for this could be… • Volcanic Eruptions • A Receding Glacier (click on one of the highlighted examples to observe succession in action).

  5. The first organisms that inhabit an area are know as ____________________. Below is an example, known as ______________.

  6. Once these begin to die and decompose, soil begins to form.

  7. Now that soil is present, other smaller plants can grow such as ____________ and ____________. “PLACE IMAGES HERE”

  8. As more plants die, the soil layer becomes thicker, making it possible for wildflowers, grasses, and other plants to grow.

  9. These plants die… more soil….MORE SOIL = BIGGER PLANTS SHRUBS AND TREES

  10. A variety of plants make it possible for a variety of ___________ to move in and survive. “PLACE IMAGES HERE”

  11. A stable group of plants and animals that are the result of ecological succession is known as a _____________ community. WATCH IT HAPPEN

  12. SECONDARY SUCCESSION
