  3. I. The Historicity of the Flood (It actually did happen!) • A. The opinion of “mockers” • 1. The fatal error of evolution (2 Pet 3:3-4) • B. God’s answer to man’s error • 1. That which “escapes their notice” (2 Peter 3:5-6)

  4. C. Four facts which believers should not overlook • 1. God’s grace (2 Peter 3:8-9 cf. 1 Cor12:11 & James 1:18; Ezek 33:11) • 2. Our attitude (2 Peter 3:11-12) • 3. Our understanding of God’s delay (2 Peter 3:14-16) • 4. Our security and growth (2 Peter 3:17-18)

  5. II. The Reasons for the Flood • A. God’s “way” had been corrupted (Gen 6:12 cf Is 53:6; John 14:6)—better translation is “his” rather than “their.” • 1. What was God’s Way? Rom 5:18-19 • 2. The death of “one” is a part of that plan (Heb 9:24-29; John 11:50-52)

  6. B. How was God’s plan corrupted ? • 1. The “Sons of God” took wives of the “daughters of men” (Cf John 1:6-2:1) • 2. What would the offspring of this union be? A class, not a race…thus not redeemable by “one Man.”

  7. C. What was God’s decision? • 1. To destroy those who were corrupted – (Gen 6:12) • 2. To save Noah because of faith (Heb 11:7 “…things not yet seen.” • 3. To illustrate His grace (Gen 6:8) –Note that Noah did not receive deliverance because of what he deserved, but by grace • 4. To ensure that His Way was never again liable to be “corrupted” in this way (Jude 6; 2 Peter 2:4-5) • 5. This was a “one time” judgment (2 Peter 2:6-9; Gen 9:13)

  8. And so we see that the Adversary, knowing of God’s Plan of Redemption, tried to undermine and overthrow that plan and defeat God’s purpose of providing a Sacrifice for man’s sin by His grace and through one Man, His Son, Jesus Christ.
