  3. Introduction • The main purpose of the Mainpat refugee camp project is to create a community water filter located at the camps central well. • The secondary purpose of the Mainpat refugee camp project is to find a viable way to dispose of the human waste at the local monastery.

  4. Background • Mainpat is a Tibetan refugee camp established in 1962. • The camp itself is composed of seven smaller camps, each with its own well. • Mainpatis located in central India in a relatively moist region of the country. • It is one of the poorest refugee camps in India and has a population of roughly 900 people. • The primary disease ravaging the community is typhoid fever, mainly due to poor hygienic practices in the area.

  6. Existing Conditions • Very poor water quality. • Almost every house holds filter. • Poor sanitary conditions.

  8. Potential Challenges • The problems that may arise in our project mainly consist of a need for more information. Water quality reports on the area may be scarce, so the best way to overcome the problem is to take the closest water we can find and simulate. • The waste disposal at the monastery will have the difficulty of required testing. Since there is an existing septic tank and sewer lines, testing will show if salvageable. Soil testing will also play a large role in the septic tank. • The cost of both parts of the projects will play a large part of challenge. The need for our water filtration to be both a reasonable cost and effective will be difficult. To overcome this challenge our group will need to narrow water filtration designs until the right design is found.
