The site • Location • West of Berlin • 5+km from Ketzin “city” • Site choice ? • It was available • It is brown field (quick, no EIA) • Legacy issues • Former storage site - status • Basic concept - reservoir-seal geology. • Reservoir uncertain • Seal “unproven” Figure 1. Location of the town, Ketzin, Germany. The Ketzin anticline, the site for the CO2SINK experiment, is located in the vicinity of the town.

  3. Site Structure • Unproven 4-way dip closure – i.e. no HC, few 100s m above a salt swell • Up to 40m of Triassic fluvial reservoirs; perm 10mD – 500mD; porosity 6-12% (nominal) 3D Stuttgart Formation Reservoir architecture CO2SINK drill site Ketzin

CO2SINK – in brief WHAT ? • EU, onshore “storage” “project nr Berlin • Three shallow wells (<800m) • Up to 60,000 tonnes injected at +/- 1kg/s • Unproven 4-way dip closure. • Up to 40m of Triassic (mid-keuper) fluvial reservoirs (10mD – 500mD) • High salinity “0.2 [kg/kg]” • But … ~300m below abandoned, former DDR shallow gas storage site - numerous old wells. WHY ? • To contribute to public confidence that geosequestration is “safe”. • Specific aims • Intensive monitoring of CO2 fate. • Benchmarking of numerical models. • Development of risk assessment schema

Plan • Drilling - 3 shallow wells (<800m) - 2 observation & 1 inject • Injection - ‘up to’ 60 000 tons +/- 1kg/s - high salinity brine “0.2 [kg/kg]” - Food grade, pure CO2, hydrogen plant • Geology - 40m Triassic (mid-keuper) fluvial sandstone - Beneath a 200m thick Triassic mudstone “seal”. - 1.5 km down-flank of the crest of the anticline
