  1. 3 Chapter 3 Lit Notes 11/9/09 • Setting– where and when a story takes place. Realistic (believable) when the customs fit the time and place. • The setting may be responsible for the story’s main conflict (think Hatchet), often acting as a character. • As an element of literature, it can also help create the tone and mood, or atmosphere. • May have to be inferred from the details in the story. • Tone– the way a writer feels about a place or • character. Tone is revealed by word choice. • Chronology– events are presented in the time • sequence in which they occurred. (1st, next, last)

  2. Personification– non-human objects are described as if they are human. (The fire ran up the stairs and ate the curtains.)Cause– the reason for an action or reaction.Effect– what happened next (the action/reaction.)Generalization– a broad statement that can apply to many situations.Conclusion– your final thought or judgment about what you have read.; it can be supported with information from the text.
