College and Career Readiness • To be college- and career-ready, high school graduates must have studied a rigorous and broad curriculum anchored in the demands of postsecondary and business that is grounded in the core academic disciplines, but also consisting of other subjects that are part of a well-rounded education. College and Career Readiness Can be achieved through these activities: • Develop university/college, business, and community partnerships to increase student service opportunities and student achievement • Increase access to educational technology for students to ensure they are equipped to succeed in the digital world • Alignment of all courses to the Common Core State Standards • (and e. and f.) Expand access for students to college-level experiences (additional AP courses, internships, business instruction, and opportunities to enroll in college courses)

College and Career Readiness • Increase access to educational technology for students to ensure they are equipped to succeed in the digital world By April 2013, we will have expanded the “bring your own device” pilot to MHS By September 2013, we will have established a district teacher grant program for devices and will have awarded teachers with top proposals By June 2014, every student in grades 5-12 will be using Naviance By June 2015, tablets will have replaced textbooks in at least one department or class or course

Alignment of all courses to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) By November 2012, we will have completed the NJQSAC Statement of Assurance and District Performance Review self-assessment By June 2013, based on the county review of our self-assessment, we will have adopted either the CCSS “crosswalk” alignment documents or the state curriculum models In June 2013, December 2013, June 2014, December 2014, and June 2015, the administration will provide updates on progress toward our five-year curriculum cycle By September 2015, all guides will have been rewritten, Board approved, and implemented

  15. High Quality Instruction • High-quality instruction (curriculum, instruction and assessment) is engaging and differentiated, standards based, data driven, and research- and evidence-based. Curriculum, instruction, and assessment that are grounded in the culturally responsive practices of relevance, identity, belonging and community will serve to best engage all students (Wisconsin RTI Center).

High Quality Instruction Can be achieved through these activities: • Consistent implementation of formative assessments to derive data to better inform differentiated instruction • Successful implementation of new programs, reflective of best practices, such as Metuchen Summer Institute, Balanced Literacy, Guided Math, Middle School Advisory, Investigative Science, Graphic Design, and CrossFit.

High Quality Instruction • Consistent implementation of formative assessment for data driven instruction By June 2013 we will have completed the program evaluation by analyzing data from the teacher evaluation system By June 2014, we will have evaluated the success of implemented professional development and have evidence of formative assessment in all lesson plans By June 2015, we will have implemented a data management system by which to assess student growth from formative assessment evidence

Implementation of new programs By June 2013 we will have planned the Metuchen Summer Institute, assessed the first full year of institutional Balanced Literacy and Advisory, and assessed the effectiveness of our Cross Fit program By June 2014, we will have evaluated the success of elementary guided math and graphic design and other half-year elective courses at MHS By June 2015, we will have implemented a true STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,and Math) initiative

Professional Development • Professional learning that increases educator effectiveness and results, for all students uses a variety of sources and types of student, educator, and system data to plan, assess, and evaluate professional learning (Learning Forward, Standards for Professional Learning).

Professional Development Can be achieved through these activities: • Engage all staff in the self-examination and self-evaluation necessary for on-going growth (observation/evaluation process, Middle States visit, and QSAC evaluation) • Implement new teacher evaluation system for increased teacher/administrator accountability and enhanced teacher practice through data-driven professional development with the goal of further-increasing student achievement • Establish formal New Teacher Induction program with monthly meetings (2012-2013 for year one teachers; 2013-14 for year one and year two teachers; 2014-2015 for year one, two, and three teachers)

Engage all staff in the self-examination and self-evaluation necessary for on-going growth (observation/evaluation process, Middle States visit, and QSAC evaluation) By November 2012, all employees will have contributed to our completion of the QSAC self-assessment By December 2012, all MHS staff will have contributed to preparation for Middle States review By June 2013, all staff will have used Stronge self-evaluation rubrics,and will have included self-evaluation data as part of PDPs.

January 23, 2013 update • MHS Middle States interim review (Ms. LaFauci to make presentation to Board on March 12th) • Currently in fifth year of seven year cycle (using AFG model) • Goals summary: • Academic Goals: to increase student performance on the HSPA. • Student Life Goals: to increase student involvement in community service, heighten career awareness, and increase communication both within the school and between the school and home. • Interim Report: • Middle States Association reacted very positively to self-evaluation • Communication goal has been met; sites set even higher now • Community service and career awareness goals still in progress

Implement new teacher evaluation system for increased teacher/administrator accountability and enhanced teacher practice through data-driven professional development with the goal of further-increasing student achievement By November 2012, all training for teachers and administrators on the Stronge model for teacher evaluation will have been completed By June 2013, all staff will have been evaluated using the Stronge model; and teacher feedback and survey results will have been collected

Establish a formal New Teacher Induction Program with monthly meetings By June 2013, all new-to-Metuchen teachers will have completed the Year One Program By June 2014, all first- and second-year teachers will have completed the Year One or Year Two Program By June 2015, all first-, second-, and third-year teachers will have completed the Year One, Year Two, or Year Three Program After each of the above school years, evidence of increased student achievement will be sought.

Excellence for All Can be achieved through these activities: • Improve performance of lowest performing subgroups with the goal of reducing the achievement gap in general and addressing the Focus school classification of Edgar School • Investigate and recommend changes to school schedules to maximize learning opportunities • Provide multiple opportunities to increase student participation in academic competitions • Establisha revised G&T program that addresses the unique abilities and talents of the truly gifted, while also providing enrichment for all children.

Excellence for All • Improve performance of lowest performing subgroups with the goal of reducing the achievement gap in general and addressing the Focus school classification of Edgar School By June 2013, NJASK scores and Student Growth Profiles will be used to assess an increased student achievement status for all subgroups By June 2014, Edgar School will have been exited from the Focus School designation through the improvement of its lowest performing subgroups

Investigate and recommend scheduling changes that maximize student learning opportunities By December 2012 and December 2013, we will have a clear reduction in the number of curriculum decisions driven by space, building configuration, staffing and scheduling (recommendations may include: changes to time, periods, grouping, staffing, etc)

Provide multiple opportunities to increase student participation in academic competitions By June 2013, with an update in December 2013, we will have increased district-wide the number of students participating in academic competitions, an increase in the number of students or groups placing in various competitions; we will have analyzed data from teacher and students surveys to help determine future endeavors

  37. Excellence for All • d. Establish a revised G&T program that addresses the unique abilities and talents of the truly gifted, while also providing enrichment for all children. By April 2013 we will have a recommendation for a program By September 2013 we will have an individualized approach for each of our truly gifted students By September 2014, we will have established a plan/program to provide enrichment opportunities for all students according to their needs and/or interests
