Proteins Move Laterally, NOT transversely (flip-flop) Integral Proteins –Transverse the membrane • Channels for Passive Transport • Pumps for Active Transport • Cell Adhesion Proteins • Membrane-bound Enzymes (such as The Electron Transport Chain on the Cristae of Mitochondria) Peripheral Proteins – Attach to only one leaflet or membrane layer • Antigens • Hormone Receptors

  4. Carbohydrates Glycoproteins – peripheral proteins that have a carbohydrate group attached • Carbohydrate always attaches to Outer Leaflet

  5. Cholesterol Abundant in plasma membrane ↑ Cholesterol = ↓ fluidity ↑ Cholesterol = ↓ permeability
