Writing Tips • Write about what’s in the play, not what a director has chosen. • Kenneth Branagh chose to show Hamlet in front of a mirror – this is not in the play. • Efficient writing • Strong verbs • Avoid repeating titles • Opheila’s father, Polonius. • Avoid retelling the story – remind the reader

  6. Modern Language Association (MLA) • Essay in MLA format. • Heading • Header • Double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman • Works cited • Play title is italicized. • Parenthetical citations

  7. MLA continued • Parenthetical citations • Arabic numbers for Act, Scene, and line numbers. • Example (2.2.166-166) • Technically, it is (Ham 2.2.166) • Less than four lines – separate line breaks with /. • More than four – use block quotation.
