IOP • Criteria: • 10-15 Minutes • Topic, Focus, and Structure based upon nature and scope of presentation • All students expected to demonstrate • Knowledge and understanding of the work • Thorough appreciation of the aspect discussed • Good use of strategies to engage an audience • Delivery in a manner appropriate to the task
IOP responsibilities • Student responsibilities • Select appropriate material for presentation • Organize material into a coherent structure • Choose a means of presentation and delivery that is suited to the activity and topic • Teacher responsibilities • Offer guidance in selecting topic • Allow student to present • Engage in follow up discussion
Suggested Activities (from IB manual) • Explanation of particular aspect of work • Explanation of a particular interpretation of a work • Setting of a work against another body of material such as social background or political views. • Commentary on the use of a particular image, idea, or symbol in work • Comparison of two passages, characters, or works • Commentary on a passage from a work • Presentation of two opposing readings of a work
Suggested Activities II (Creative) • Critique of student’s own writing in the style of an author studied • Performance or pastiche of a poem studied (with explanation) • An account of a student’s developing response to a work • Monologue or Dialogue by a character at an important point in the work • Reminiscences by a character at a later point in life • An author’s reaction to a particular interpretation of his or her work in a given context (ex. A critical defense against a charge of subversion or immorality before a censorship board)

IOP Rubric • Criterion A: Knowledge and Understanding of the work • 1-2 = There is little knowledge or understanding • 3-4 = There is some knowledge and superficial understanding of the content • 9-10 = There is excellent knowledge and understand of the content and implications

To what extent are strategies used to interest the audience (for example, eye contact, audibility, gesture, effective use of supporting material)? • 1-2 = Delivery of the presentation is seldom appropriate, with little attempt to interest the audience • 9-10 = Delivery of the presentation is highly effective, with purposeful strategies used to interest the audience

How well is the register (vocabulary, tone, sentence structure, terminology) and style suited to the choice of presentation? • 1-2= The language is rarely appropriate, with a very limited attempt to suit register and style to the choice of presentation • 9-10 = The language is very clear and entirely appropriate, with register and style consistently effective and suited to the choice of presentation
