  1. Romans 7:24-25 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

  2. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.

  3. 1 Corinthians 15:57 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  4. 1 Timothy 6:12 12Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

  5. You Can’t Win This Struggle On Your Own

  6. Accepting Help from God • The Lord is our compassionate High Priest • God is faithful during our temptations • God offers conditions by which we can be cleansed when we falter and sin

  7. Accepting Help from One Another • We must learn to appreciate the chastening of God – Heb. 12:1-17 • God’s chastening is not to hurt us, but to help us, though it often hurts – cf. Heb. 12:10-11 • God’s chastening might be revealed to us through a variety of providential means… • Biblical reproof, rebuke and exhortation – cf. 2 Tim. 4:2-5 • Loving confrontation – cf. Gal. 2:11-21 • Brotherly discipline – cf. 1 Cor. 5:1-11 • Other providential means – cf. Psa. 119:11 • A spirit led heart and mind will love God’s chastening, not resent it – Heb. 12:5-6 (Prov. 3:11-12; Job 5:17-18; Rev. 3:19)

  8. Accepting Help from One Another • We should never discount the power of our influence for good (and for evil) when it comes to the incredible struggle we all have against sin – Heb. 6:4-12 • We are reminded of the influence of evil company. Therefore, let us always be good company! – 1 Cor. 15:33-34 • Let us always strive to be worthy of imitation – 1 Cor. 4:16-17; 11:1 • Our assemblies are a key place for such exhortation and encouragement against sin, yet we must exhort one another daily – Heb. 10:19-25 (cf. Heb. 3:12-13) • A spirit led heart and mind will seek to always emulate and exemplify what is good – cf. 3 John 11

  9. Accepting Help from One Another • We need to view confessing our sins to one another as a blessing and not as a punishment – Jas. 5:13-20 • The purpose is “that you may be healed” … not “that you may be shamed” • The ultimate goal is “to save a sinner from death” … not “shame a sinner to death” • We must learn to “bear one another’s burdens” as we “bear with one another in love” – cf. Gal. 6:1-2; Eph. 4:1-2 (Col. 3:12-14) • A spirit led heart and mind will be genuinely sorry for wrongdoing and seek the prayers and aid of loving brethren – cf. 2 Cor. 7:8-12

  10. Ephesians 6:10-18 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

  11. Ephesians 6:10-18 14Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faithwith which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18prayingalways with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—
