  1. Ozone Depletion by Manuela B & Penelope L

  2. What is the issue? • The ozone is depleting • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) • UV radiation will hit earth

  3. How does this issue relate to weather? • CFC’s = Greenhouse gases • Global Warming makes weather more extreme

  4. How does this issue relate to climate change? • Greenhouse gases cause Global Warming • Atmosphere gets warmer • Stratosphere gets cooler, ozone depletes more.

  5. What evidence is there that this issue exists? • GMD measures the ozone levels - 20 years • Dobson spectrophotometer

  6. Relevant Chemistry Concepts • Ozone = O3 (O + O2) • CFC = Chlorine, Fluorine, Carbon. • Chlorine breaks apart the ozone

  7. Who does this affect the most? • EPA: Before 2075... 60 MILLION GET CANCER. • EPA: 17 MILLION more have cataracts • Less trees = more CO2

  8. Why should we care about this issue • Affects growth of trees so less CO2 will be destroyed • Ozone stops UV radiation from hitting earth • UV radiation = skin cancer, cataracts, other illnesses

  9. What can we do about this issue? • CLOSE YOUR FRIDGE • WALK, USE MBTA, CARPOOL, DRIVE ALONE LESS. • Reduce CFC’s (found in aerosol cans, refrigerators, freezers)
