  2. WHY WE EXIST In 2009, three young Bay Area lawyers sat down over dinner together. At first there were two topics of conversation: One about how to form lasting connections within our profession; the other about distributing care packages to the homeless. …Then two topics became one. We asked ourselves, why not network while we volunteer? We can get out of our offices and improve our communities, while networking with other attorneys. ACCOMPLISHMENTS AT A GLANCE BIRTH OF A NONPROFIT ► October 2009: Idea hatched ► November 2009: Website & logo ► December 2009: $7000 in donations from The Armstrong Law Firm, The Walkup Law Firm, and Camerlengo Johnson ► December 2009: First volunteer event (Holiday Bags for the Homeless) ► December 2009: Facebook page up and running (145 members strong) ► January 2010: First members meeting/brainstorm session ► March 2010: Members Directory – 65 members strong ► August 2010: 501(c)(3) nonprofit!!! COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT 2009-2010 ► Two-hundred fifty homeless people dressed in socks, scarves, and gloves for winter ► Five hundred hospitalized children receive personalized craft kits to keep them busy during treatment ► $10,000 raised to rebuild a school in Port-au-Prince, Haiti ► Lake Merced recreational area and lookout point landscaped

OUR PARTNERS & CAUSES HOLIDAY BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS Four years ago, Hastings Law School alumnus and ABC co-founder Laura Mazza gave a pair of socks to a homeless man in SF’s Tenderloin district, and was surprised by his outpour of gratitude. She realized that few of the Tenderloin’s homeless even had socks to get them through the winter…and an idea was born. In 2009, ABC hosted the third annual Holiday Bags for the Homeless, and approximately 30 volunteers distributed 250 care packages, as well as over 100 blankets and umbrellas.

  5. OUR PARTNERS & CAUSES THE ALEXANDRA CHILES FOUNDATION Alexandra Chiles was eighteen years old when she died in 2000 following a six-year battle with cancer. Throughout her illness, one of her favorite activities was beading necklaces, which she gave as thank-you gifts to nurses. The Foundation is a non-profit that creates personalized crafting kits for hospitalized children, so that they too can create something beautiful and gift-worthy. On May 15, 2010, more than 20 ABC volunteers assembled approximately 600 craft kits with personalized notes. We also created a website for the Foundation.

  6. OUR PARTNERS & CAUSES SAN FRANCISCO RECREATION & PARKS SF Parks & Rec manages 225 parks with a total of more than 3,400 acres. In 2010, the parks are suffering from a nearly $12.4 million budget shortfall, and they sorely need volunteers to help with renovations, landscaping, and plantings. On March 20, ABC volunteers socialized while weeding, mulching, and landscaping around the perimeter of Lake Merced

  7. OUR PARTNERS & CAUSES ARCHITECTURE FOR HUMANITY is a nonprofit design services firm that focuses on building a more sustainable future. Following the 7.0 quake that hit Haiti on January 12, we partnered with Architecture for Humanity and, on April 22nd, ABC co-sponsored the SF Remember Haiti Event, raising more than $10,000 to rebuild a school in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

OUR PARTNERS & CAUSES FAMILY HOUSE Family house is a nonprofit providing temporary housing to low-income families of seriously-ill children who are receiving treatment at UCSF Children’s Hospital. On September 11, 2010, ABC volunteers painted rooms, gardened, and disinfected toys, to prepare for a new family.

OUR PARTNERS & CAUSES OAKLAND FAIRYLAND Fairyland is a ten-acre park on the shores of Oakland’s Lake Merritt where children’s literature comes to life, and low income kids can get free admission. On October 16, ABC volunteers painted and “spruced” the Oakland Fairyland sets, and on October 30-31 they dressed up as fairytale characters and staffed the Halloween Jack O’Lantern Jamboree.

  10. 2009-2010 DATA SHEET VOLUNTEER HOURS In our first year, more than 55 individual volunteers donated their time. We contributed approximately 380 hours of direct volunteer time in our first ten months. Here’s how we spent those hours: ABC VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2009-2010: STEVEN MIYAKE Steven Miyake has been an ABC member since its inception in late 2009. It’s not his first (or last) volunteer gig. He has been volunteering (with more than five organizations at a time) sine he began practicing law in 1984. (He specializes in real estate and commercial litigation with Neal & Associates, where his successes include keeping destitute clients, affected by “toxic” loans, in their homes. Steven volunteers with ABC in order to “give back,” and as a means to personal fulfillment. His favorite events are those involving physical labor. As he puts it: “I work with my mind 8 hours a day 5-6 days a week. Working with my hands is relaxing, therapeutic, and I get to see results immediately.”

  11. 2009-2010 DATA SHEET FUNDS In addition to individual contributions, we received generous seed funding from three law firms: Walkup Melodia; Camerlengo & Johnson and The Armstrong Law Firm, as well as several individuals. Twenty-one percent ($1,553) is being maintained in reserve. Fifty percent ($3,634) was spent purchasing 250 Holiday Bags for the Homeless (including scarves, gloves, socks, blankets, umbrellas, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, hairbrushes....) Thirteen percent went to one-time start-up fees (incorporation and nonprofit tax status). Twelve percent went to event costs (including food, coffee, cider, etc. for our volunteers) The remaining four percent was spent on logo design, fliers, promotional magnets, and other marketing efforts.
