  1. Record Keeping Why do we keep records? To save time, money and even stress

  2. What makes record keeping easy? • Journals • Project activities • Purchasing supplies • Animals and fee • Medication giving • Training, grooming, exercising • Project meetings • Fair entries • Contest • Time spent working on project

  3. Why do we use journals? • To track dates, time spent, cost, values and explanations of events • To help fill in the rest of our project record book • To help fill out applications such as college or employment where community involvement is required • No one can remember all we do with a project

  4. So what do I put in my journal? • Dates (keep them in order of time) (filling this out once a week is really be helpful and can show growth in the project area) • What did you do or make (I fed my lamb) (I went to a food project meeting) • How much/how many (fed 5 oz of cob and 2 lbs of hay) (bought 6 ¼ flats of quilting material) • How much did it cost you? Enter the cost of the items as you bought them. Not the value. • Value/Income: what is the value of the feed or material? Not the sale price • Time spent: remember you have to add this up at the end of the page • Explanation/comments/what you learned: very important, this is where detail is so important and you can really show off to the judges.

  5. JudgesWhat do they look at in my record book? • Age appropriate presentation of material • Years in project appropriate • Neatness • Organization • Complete information but uncluttered • Shows growth • Accurate facts • Word usage

  6. Notes • All districts have their own score sheets and instructions for your records and there is another set for the state record book contest. • Make sure to read these instructions before starting and before turning in your record book.
