The Quality Matters Program • Developed through a FIPSE grant in 2003 • Designed for faculty focused on improving student learning • Provided tools and training for quality assurance of online courses • Adopted by DSUin 2005, 165 self/peer reviewed courses + 118 instructors

The Rubric • Eight broad standards: • Course Overview and Introduction • Learning Objectives • Assessment and Measurement • Resources and Materials • Learner Engagement • Course Technology • Learner Support • Accessibility • Alignment: Critical course elements work together to ensure that students achieve the desired learning outcomes. Key components must align
To Meet Expectations A course achieves • all essential standards (each 3 points) • A minimum of 65 out of 76 points • 85% (65/76) or Better
Peer Review Process is • NOT about individual instructor • NOT about faculty evaluation • NOT about pass/fail
Which courses will be required to be reviewed? • Self Review • New online instructors • Existing courses, taught by the same instructor, review cycle of every three years. • Peer Review (faculty to faculty) • newly developed or redesigned courses that receive Summer Grants.
How to Self/Peer Review? • Go to the review tool https://secure.dsu.edu/coursereview/login.asp • Enter your system login • View the list of courses • Select Yes or No and add descriptions
How to Self/Peer Review?(2) • View the annotations and examples • Points can be automatically calculated • Submit a self review, upon which an e-mail notification will be sent to coordinator and the assigned reviewers.
How to Self/Peer Review?(3) • View instructor’s self review first. • Observe the course site from a student’s point of view. • Provide review feedback on course improvement. • Submit the completed review, upon which an e-mail notification will be sent to the course instructor.
Tips for Design Your Course to Meet Quality Assurance in D2L
Preparation • Have a simple start • Think about course goals/students/formats • Prepare course documents • Break a long syllabus into separate sections
Preparation (2) • Consider content structure and navigation • Be familiar with D2L| • Know how to get help • Plan and design course before teaching
Before and Upon Course Starts • Communicate with students through D2L mail • Check and make sure the course is active • Provide student orientation • Create an opportunity for student introduction • Provide technical support resources
Course Content Delivery • Use standard HTML webpages • Ensure course is accessible to all students • Keep course content organized • Use Role Switch and Preview in D2L
Course Content Delivery (2) • Beyond PowerPoint • Add audio narration • Create screen capture/casting • Require minimal hardware/software
Course Content Delivery (2) • Avoid creating large video files • Use shorter (3-5 minutes) videos • Get DSU Video service support help@dsu.edu • Put it online (YouTube, Slideshare.net)
Class Communication • Clarify your expectations • Maintain instructor presence in the course • Provide timely feedback about student progress • Create an FAQ to address common questions
Class Communication (2) • Deliver updates, important notices (News) • Post course related events (Calendar) • Engage active learning (Group/Discuss) • Offer office hours in real time(Collaborate) • Social media (Facebook, Google+, Twitter)
