  1. What happens when you put an acid and a base together? One thing only (or maybe two, depending upon how you count)

  2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQhwNtY3N2k An Acid + a Base always makes salt + water, sometimes CO2 gas as well. Example Acid + Base Salt + Water HCl(AQ) + NaOH(AQ)NaCl(AQ) + HOH(L)

  3. Example 2 Acid + Base Salt + Water HNO3(AQ) + KOH(AQ) KNO3(AQ) + HOH(L)

  4. The Acid and Base solutions go together “LIKE” a double replacement reaction and switch partners, BUT they are not just solutions, they are ACIDS and BASES. This is a FANCY double replacement reaction, and it’s called ACID- BASE NEUTRALIZATION, because the acid and the base become NOT acid or base.

  5. Write the balanced chemical reactions for when you mix these acids and bases… LABEL THE ACID, BASE, the SALT, and the WATER Nitric Acid and sodium hydroxide Phosphoric Acid and potassium hydroxide Sulfuric Acid and Lithium hydroxide

  6. SKELETONS

  7. BALANCED

  8. But Alka Seltzer has a formula of CaCO3(S) (but it dissolves into water which is just a spectator) and it somehow neutralizes stomach acid which is HCl? Let’s try to balance this one! NaHCO3(AQ) + HCl(AQ) We still get a SALT and WATER, but we’ll also get some CO2 GAS as well.

  9. NaHCO3(AQ) + HCl(AQ) NaCl(AQ) + HOH(L) + CO2(G) carbonated + acid makesasalt + water + CO2 gas base When you take Alka-Seltzer, you consume sodium hydrogen carbonate and combine it to hydrochloric acid. In your stomach the acid disappears with the base, becoming the salt and water, while the gas is you burping (excuse me!)

  10. Wegmans Antacid contains calcium carbonate. Combine that to hydrochloric acid that might be in excess in your stomach after too much pepperoni pizza. CaCO3(S) (dissolves in the saliva + acid)

  11. CaCO3(S) + 2HCl(AQ) CaCl2(AQ) + HOH(L) + CO2(G) TUMS has magnesium hydroxide solid (a weak base) for your stomach acid - HCl. Balance that one now. Mg(OH)2

  12. 2HCl(AQ) + Mg(OH)2(AQ) MgCl2(AQ) + 2HOH(L) Acid + base makes salt + water

  13. Homework due Wednesday Acid Base HW #2 Handout
