What:designing buildings, physics/structure based, 3d modeling on computer, building physical models, lighting design, estimating quantities of material & costs, conserving historical buildings, research, designing electrical/water/ acoustic/air conditioning services, problem solving - working out how to build stuff, technical & CAD drawing, supervising the use of buildings How: UAI 85+, 5+ years of Uni Study before registration as Architect, LOTS OF WORK EXPERIENCE!!! Who: patient high achievers, analytical, attention to detail, motivated/committed, visualise in 3d, long term outlook, maturity, seriousness Pos /Negs: highly competitive, long & hard hours, deadlines, responsibility, constrained by clients/regulations etc, poorly paid at entry level but improves, respected,travel, self-employment, challenging, variety, job for life Architecture

What:creating experiences, conceptual, structural/ construction based especially carpentry/joinery/ electrical/ plumbing, working with colours & materials, problem solving, space planning, 3d modeling on computer, technical & CAD drawing, supervising trades How: UAI 85+, 4+ years of study at Uni or Enmore TAFE, LOTS OF WORK EXPERIENCE!!! Who: creative high achievers, practical problem solvers, self-motivated & take responsibility, visualise in 3d, good listeners, confident, adaptable, leaders, open-minded Pos/Negs: highly competitive, long & hard hours, tight deadlines, responsibility, constrained, poorly paid at entry level, little recognition, self-employment, challenging, creative/fun, variety, design spaces you can take your friends to, opportunity to learn about other industries & businesses Interior Architecture/Design

Who: practical, likes computers, enquiring, attention to detail, focussed, fast worker, doesn’t mind repetition, visualise in 3d, interested in architecture & design, takes direction Pos/Negs: long hours – tight deadlines, little recognition, repetitive, little room for design freedom or creativity, good pay & high demand, self-employment, challenging & stimulating, rewards accuracy & attention to detail Drafting

What:styling interior spaces (largely residential), working with colours & materials – especially soft furnishings, furniture and decorative items, styling for real estate & display homes, media exposure How: 1+ years of study at TAFE, PLUS WORK EXPERIENCE!!! Who: like handicrafts/making things, eye for colour & fabric, homely, artistic. Pos/Negs: highly competitive – industry is over populated, competing with ever-growing popularity of DIY, constrained by client’s emotions/poor taste, flexible hours, self-employed, creative/fun, lots of variety, get to see how different people live Interior Decorating

Who: people who enjoy using computers to make art, eye for detail/colour/order, motivated & focussed, take responsibility, like photography Pos/Negs: extremely competitive, long & hard hours – tight deadlines, high pressure/stress, poorly paid at entry level, goodpay & high demand at mid level up, global, variety, self-employment, challenging, creative/fun Graphic Design

  7. What: garments, textiles, jewellery, accessories, costumes, buyer, fashion editor How: UAI 85+, 4 + yrs at Uni or 2+ years of study at TAFE or private college, LOTS OF WORK EXPERIENCE!!! Who: experiments in own clothing & makeup, eye for colour/shape, likes handicrafts, flamboyant, sensual, focussed & passionate, ‘lives’ design, highly confident Pos/Negs: EXTREMELY competitive, long & hard hours – tight deadlines, global, variety, self-employment, challenging, creative/fun Fashion Design

What: object design, furniture, products, technology styling, inventions, accessories, vehicles, manufacturing, wearables, ceramics, research/design history How:UAI 70+,4 + years Uni, LOTS OF WORK EXPERIENCE!!! Who: inventive people, enquiring, visualise in 3d, eye for detail/styling, work well under pressure, understand trends, adaptable, interested in materials & how things are made Pos/Negs: EXTREMELY competitive – flooded market, challenging, high pressure, global, variety, self-employment or work for brands Industrial Design
