  1. 1. Who is Jesus? The Trinitarian Faith Christianity means a belief in Trinity and Oneness (monotheism) Oneness: - The Christian Creed begins with “Truly we believe in One God” - The sign of the cross - 1 Jn 5:7 “There are three that testify in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one” – Jehovah’s witness Gal 3:20 “God is one”, Jas 2:19, Eph 4:5, 1 Tim 2:5, Jn 5:44, Rom 3:30, Matt 19:17, Mk 12:29 – new testament, old testament – Ex 20:3, Deut 6:4 … prophetic books

  2. Three Gods or One God…? • Christianity proclaims that the three persons are One God (1 Jn 5:7, Matt 28:19 – baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” • 2 Cor 13:14 says “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen” • We can ask what is 1 + 1 + 1 … we reply that 1 x 1 x 1

  3. Are the three persons (hypostases) ever separate from each other...? • The Son says “I am in the Father and the Father is in Me (Jn 14:11), “I and My Father are One” (Jn10:30) • The Father and the Son are one .. • The Holy Spirit and the Father are one “The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him” • Christ says “God is Spirit” (Jn 4:24) and “the Spirit of your Father” (Mt 10: 20) • The Holy Spirit and Christ are one “The Spirit of Christ” (1 Pet 1:11)

  4. Summary • The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are One Godhead; the Father and the Son are One, the Holy Spirit is One with the Father, and One with the Son as well • The Father is God • The Son is God – Col 2: 8,9 “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” • The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5: 3,4) “Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit … You have not lied to men but to God.” • The Persons of the Christian Trinity are equal in being eternal, not differing in time

  5. Trinity….not in the bible? • The word Trinity is not mentioned in the Gospels. However the apostles preached Christianity to the nations amidst a pagan world that proclaimed polytheism. Therefore the apostles avoided the word “Trinity”.

  6. Who is Jesus? • Briefly, He is the Son of God who has the power to forgive sins among many other things. • People who reject Jesus, reject that He is the Son of God
