  1. Ezra 2:69 “THEY GAVE ACCORDING TO THEIR ABILITY”

  2. “They gave” • Ezra 2:69 – According to their ability, they gave to the treasury for the work sixty-one thousand gold drachmas, five thousand minas of silver, & one hundred priestly garments.

  3. “They gave” • Exo 35:4-5 (Offerings for the Tabernacle) – And Moses spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, “This is the thing which the LORD commanded, saying: 5 ‘Take from among you an offering to the LORD. Whoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it as an offering to the LORD: gold, silver, & bronze…. (Read 36:2-7)

  4. “They gave” • Thechurch’s contribution (1 Cor 16) • To support preaching (1 Cor 9:3-12) • For physical needs in the church (Acts 2:44-45; 4:32-35; Rom 15:25-26) • The individual giving • (Acts 20:35; Eccl 11:1-2; Prov 14:31; 19:17; 21:13; 22:9; 28:27; 29:7; 31:20; Luke 10:33-36; 1 Tim 5:16)

  5. “According to their ability” • Jesus illustrated “ability” (Matt 25.14-30) • God has given us unique abilities (Rom 12:4-8) • God knows our capability (Acts 11:27-30)

  6. “According to their ability” • 2 Cor 8:12 – For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, & not according to what he does not have… • 1 Pet 4:11 – If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory & the dominion forever & ever. (cf. 2 Sam 24:24)

  7. “To the treasury for…Lord’s work” • God has given the cong. a work to do: • Evangelism, Benevolence to saints, Edification by teaching (Matt 28:19-20; Mark 16:15; Rom 15:25-26; 2 Cor 11:8; Phil 4:15-16; 1 Tim 3:15). • He authorized a treasury from which to do that work.

  8. “To the treasury for…Lord’s work” • 1 Cor 16:1-2 (Collection for the Saints) – Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up (put into a storehouse) as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.

  9. “To the treasury for…Lord’s work” • As they were prospered by the Lord • Liberally • Beyond their ability • Willingly • Bountifully • As purposed in the heart • Not grudgingly or out of necessity • Cheerfully • 1 Cor 16:1; 2 Cor 8:2-3; 9:6-8

  10. “They gave” The churches “first gave themselves to the Lord, & then to…the will of God” (2 Cor 8:5). “According to their ability, they gave to the treasury for the work” (Ezra 2:69).
