  1. IPAC personal review focused on Accelerator technology Luis Feliciano, (CERN, Geneva)

  2. Outline • Beam Injection/Extraction • Multipoles kicker • Strip-line kicker • Other types of kickers • Pulsed Power Technology • Pulsed Systems • Semi-conductor switches • Timing and Synchronization • Ion Beam Stripping • Summary

  3. Beam Injection/Extraction - Multipoles kicker • Development of Pulsed Multipole Magnet for SR TUPJE005; • With this new design it is expected that perturbations to the stored of electron beam would suppressed up to 4 % and 0.08 % horizontally and vertically respectively of beam size.

  4. Beam Injection/Extraction - Multipoles kicker • Efficient Pulsed Quadrupole - WEPMA021; • This is iron free, quadrupole, running in a pulsed mode, which is able to recover a significant amount of the pulsing energy for the following shots .

  5. Beam Injection/Extraction - Multipoles kicker • Ceramic Chamber Integrated Pulsed Magnet - WEPMA049 • A pulsed magnet that has a combined structure of magnet coils with a ceramic vacuum chamber.

  6. Beam Injection/Extraction – Strip-line kicker • Development of Fast Kickers for the APS – WEPTY014; • For the geometry of the strip-line kicker, a “D” shaped blades are used to improve field-uniformity in the good field region.

  7. Beam Injection/Extraction – Strip-line kicker • Strip-line Kicker for Integral Optics – WEPTY051; • This kicker his capable to create an arbitrary controllable kick in 2D, and will be fit inside an existing quadrupole magnet .

  8. Beam Injection/Extraction – Strip-line kicker • Fast Injection System R&D for the APS –TUPJE069; • The present dual strip-line kicker is driven by high Voltage pulsers which will minimize the perturbation on adjacent bunches due the very fast rise and fall times.

  9. Beam Injection/Extraction – Other types • Injection Kicker using Switches – THPF034; • The Kicker system must allow pole reversal for injection of positively charged particles.

  10. Beam Injection/Extraction – Others • Fast Kicker - MOPTY033 • The use of wires instead of plates will allow to reduce the effects related to induced charges and currents.

  11. Beam Injection/Extraction – Others • Adapt. between Kicker Mag. and Pulser Cir. – WEPMA025 • The article describes aspects of mechanical and high voltage rf matching not only in between the magnet and pulser system .

  12. Beam Injection/Extraction – Others • Degassing of Kicker Magnet by Bake-out – WEPMA059 • The heater and heat shielding panels are installed into the vacuum chamber. The heater and metals were used as the reflectors just near the heater.

  13. Beam Injection/Extraction – Others • Design and Test of the CMD10 Abort Kicker – WEPWI054 • The increasing heating on kicker ferrite causes lower magnetic kick field at a nominal pulse current, this pushed us to change from the CMD5005 to CMD10 ferrite.

  14. Beam Injection/Extraction – Others • Harmonic Resonant Kicker Design – WEPMN025 • Compared to a conventional strip-line type kicker, a quarter wave resonator (QWR) based deflecting structure has a much higher shunt impedance and so requires much less RF power.

  15. Pulsed Power Technology – Pulsed Systems • Kicker Pulsers for Recycler Nova Upgrades – WEPTY027 • Improvements made on the thy. pulser, mitigate the effects of the trigger, the reservoir and the load impedance on delay and rise time .

  16. Pulsed Power Technology – Pulsed Systems • Pulsed Power Systems for ESS Klystrons - WEPTY042 • This modulator design uses a hybrid configuration (solid state switch and pulse transformer) with an advanced switching regulator to maintain a very flat voltage into the klystron over multi-millisecond pulses.

  17. Pulsed Power Technology – Pulsed Systems • Development of an IGBT Pulser for Kicker – WEPHA035 • The previous PFN pulser was equipped with thy. switch, to accomplish new performance parameters a pulser using IGBT switch was chosen.

  18. Timing and Synchronization • All-Optical Sync. of Pulsed Laser Systems - MOPHA032 • The all-optical laser synchronization at FLASH and XFEL provides femtosecond-stable timing.

  19. Ion Beam Stripping • Analy. of Stripper Foils an Electron Beam Foil - MOPWI032 • Diamond foils are used at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) as the primary strippers of hydride ions.

  20. Ion Beam Stripping • Studies of Laser-assist. H- Stripping at 400 MeV - THPF043 • Conventional H- stripping injection by using solid stripper foils in high intensity accelerators has many limitations concerning foil scattering beam losses, short lifetime of the foil including unexpected and rapid foil failure due to overheating of the foil.

  21. Ion Beam Stripping • Studies of Plasma-based Charge Strippers - THPF018 • Calculations on the charge state distributions in different charge stripping media are presented.

  22. Summary • Multipoles & Strip-line kickers will be them the futures kicker magnets? • Assess feasibility for use Switches instead of Thys; • Assess feasibility for optical fiber as replacement of control cables; • H- Stripping looks to be changeling subject. • IPAC'15: Publication of the Pre-press Proceedings
