  1. Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia WEATHER RADAR NETWORK AND USE OF RADARS WITHINTHE MULTI-HAZARDEARLY WORNING SYSTEM IN THE REPUBLIC HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL SERVICE OF SERBIA ICSEED 13 Session, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of Srpska, 28-29 April 2014

  2. Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia SERBIAN WEATHER RADAR NETWORK UNTIL 2013 * 10 Mitsubishi RC A-34 radars, installed in the period between 1978-1984, with HASIS software (Hail Suppression Information System) and DSP card for digital signal processing. Mitsubishi radars are located in Niš, Kukavica, Bešnjaja, Kruševac, Sjenica, Užice, Bukulja, Petrovac, Valjevo and Crni Vrh. * 3 Gematronik radars Installed in the period between 2000-2002, with RAINBOW and GEMAHASIS software, located in Bajša, Samoš and Novi Sad * 1 MRL-5 radar in Belgrade *LAWR (local area weather radar for Belgrade region). Animated composite reflectivity from Gematronik radars (Fruška Gora and Samoš)

  3. Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia Local Area Weather Radar MRL- 5 Radar operates at X-band and S-band simultaneously(repaired in 2010 and it is now fully automated and digitalized) On RHMSS WEB presentation images from MRL-5 and LAWR radars are also available!

  4. Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia SERBIAN WEATHER RADAR NETWORK FROM 2013 Installation of Jastrebac radar: 2013 The procurement of the radar was an initiative of the Ministries of Agriculture, Trade, Water Management and Forestry of the Republic of Serbia, and is financed by a World Bank loan through the implementation of a national project of irrigation system rehabilitation. Installation of Jastrebac radar, provide that southernand southeastern parts of Serbia get a new generation Doppler radar with Rainbow 5 software fordetecting, monitoring and categorizing all types of severe weather (heavy precipitations, large hail, gust front), and also tools for rain tracking, for estimation of surface rainfall intensity or SRI, precipitation accumulation or PAC, point rainfall total or PRT etc. Technical characteristics of the Jastrebac radar

  5. Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia With the installation of the new radar all parts of Serbia arecovered with Doppler Radars (Gematronik)with Rainbow softwer which is one of the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art sensor management system for multi-radar network management, data analysis and display available today. • Animated composite reflectivity from 3 Gematronik radars (Fruška Gora, Samoš and Jastrebac) on RHMSS WEB presentation updates every 15 minutes! Link to radar images from neighboring countries!

  6. Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia RainDart – Different Modes of Displaying Data Classification of the hydrometeors is very useful in certain situations, particularly during the winter season, in rain-snow boundary conditions, and in summer, when we want to find out whether hail reaches the ground or not.

  7. Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia Product Overview from Rainbow Software – Very Useful Tools for Nowcasting Forecasters . This radar enabled the usage of various new tools for better monitoring and forecasting hazardous weather phenomena and for issuing warnings.

  8. RHMSS Multi-Hazard Eearly Warning System Serbian Hydro-Meteorological Early Warning System(HMWS) is treated as a part of comprehensive national system for the reduction of harmful consequences of natural disasters. In the previous period RHMSS performed a complete operationaliozation of HM EWS • The essential elements of an operational warning system for meteorological or hydrological hazards are: • Data collection • Routine monitoring • Hazard detection • Hazard prediction • Watch and warning formulation • Information dissemination • Community response and feedback • Post-disaster support. Why does RHMSS issue weather warnings? MeteoAlarm and HydroAlarm are the core of the Hydro-Meteorological Early Warning System Because it is part of our governmental duties to avoid or at least reduce demage caused by weather catastrophes!

  9. RHMSS Multi-Hazard Eearly Warning System Warning degree: No serious event Potentially serious event Serious event Extreme event The example for wind speed No serious event < 17 m/s Potentially serious event<24 m/s Serious event < 28 m/s Extreme event >28 m/s The process of forming announcements and warnings Criteria and thresholds: Climatological extremes Impacts on activities and properties Damages caused by severe event WARNING Advices concerning the event (before, during, after) Hydrometeorological support after the event

  10. RHMSS Multi-Hazard Eearly Warning System Operational hydrometeorological bulletin • Meteorological data from main meteorological stations • Weather forecast and alerts for five days ahead and general forecast for ten days ahead. • Monthly weather forecast • Seasonal weather forecast • Observed hydrological data • Hydrological forecast and warnings • http://www.hidmet.gov.rs/
