Fission • Nuclear Fission is the splitting of an atomic nucleus. • Atomic bombs and nuclear reactors both perform nuclear fission • Atomic bombs split unbalanced nuclei into smaller more stable nuclei. • Nuclear reactors split a different type of uranium into smaller nuclei • A chain reaction refers to a process in which neutrons released in fission produce an additional fission in at least one further nucleus. • The nucleus in turn produces neutrons, and the process repeats. • The process may be controlled (nuclear power) or uncontrolled (nuclear weapons).

Controlled nuclear fission • Spontaneous nuclear fission
Fission • Energy Released From Each Fission • 165 MeV~ kinetic energy of fission products • 7 MeV~ gamma rays • 6 MeV~ kinetic energy of the neutrons • 7 MeV~ energy from fission products • 6 MeV~ gamma rays from fission products • 9 MeV~ anti-neutrinos from fission products • 200 MeV • 1 MeV (million electron volts) = 1.609 x 10 -13joules • Chain reaction • U235 + n → fission + 2 or 3 n + 200 MeV
