  3. ROLE OF RIVERS IN KERALA Kerala’s Lifelines

  4. PRESENT SCENARIO • Difficult for the rivers to flow. • Rising number of slum settlements on these river banks • Rivers have become backyard dumpsters.

  5. Justice would only be done if these river fronts could be revived back to their old glory by a novel redevelopment model that would bring about a sense of collective ownership and involvement.

  6. CONCEPT EVOLUTION Most of the Urban areas in Kerala has got river fronts but not knitted with the urban fabric Hence, we are planning to evolve a river front development as an extension of a private sector initiative on a PPP mode.

To evolve an urban riverfront development model that recognizes riverfront conservation • To develop river fronts as planned areas to accommodate urban amenities VISION / OBJECTIVES • ‘Redevelopment of the Waterfront to an Urban Facilitation Center ‘ • Addresses mitigative measures to present scenario. • Helps to conserve the environment and its sustenance. • Bring about a social responsibility to the local people to keep it clean.

  9. CONCEPT APPROACH • A Mixed Use Approach that creates opportunities for tourism to be part of this redevelopment • Making the waterfront accessible and pristine • Promoting its culture • Providing facilities and services

  10. The Waterfront Development proposes to showcase the characteristic of the multifunction and multidimensional nature of waterfronts by involving cultural, sport, children and public, heritage and commercial features into the waterfront.

Fixed and floating hotels (Riviera suites) • Game lodges/ arcades • Bush Camps centers • Lakeside Golf courses • Luxury Villas • Entertainment and Convention centres /Arenas -(retention of space for events – concerts, exhibitions, conference, gala dinners or indoor sports) • Museums showcasing heritage/history • Aquarium • Biodiversity exhibition centers • Retail outlets including restaurants – cafes/bars • Medical facility – Ambulance facility

Fire station • Esplanade/Marina or Promenade (Water edged pedestrian walkways) lined with riverfront gazebos, planters, trees and bridges. • Ferry boat terminals (canoes, kayak activities) • Mobility carriages or vehicles for rides • Helipad for sightseeing or charter work • Greenways -Park/gardens • Indoor skating rinks, sports facility/stadium • Car Parking lot • Commercial buildings hosting offices – Marine businesses, Art/culture academy • Water energy conservation projects
