Hey, Simon…it’s your old school chum…got any interesting problems? History – circa 2005 Besides how to make the perfect cappuccino….umm….Hey, mate, RF/microwave transistor models s^#(&*@ for doing real designs The ARC has this scheme for us to work together…it’s called a Linkage Project What’ll it cost me? Your first born. Dr. Simon Mahon Mimix Broadband Well, as long as it’s nothing too terrible…..ok! (Sweet!) And so there was “Linkage 1”
History – circa 2007 Well, that was a great start, but there’s still plenty to do…. Play it again, Simon? Ok…but I actually plan on having kids now, so can I give you cash & in-kind. Dr. Simon Mahon Mimix Broadband (Sweet!) And so there was “Linkage 2”
History – circa 2009…. Oh…what is it this time?!!!!! I got a new bloke who we should get to do this linkage thing What’s with the tie? He’s American Pity! Dude!….wanna actually design some circuits? Dr. Simon Mahon M/A-COM Technologies (Sweet!) And so there was “Linkage 3” …sort of…..
History – circa 2009….with a twist “Linkage 3” CSIRO - SKA
Last round….so what happened? • Our linkage • Poor choice of Australian partner vis a vis ARC rules • Poor connection to national priorities • DP and LP review • Mining, climate change, and healthcare • National priorities • Larger collaborations not larger dollars • Better validation, lower risk, or greater outcomes
Analysis - What seems to work:One Perspective • Power of LP is in the industry, not the academic • Industry validates problems/risk for ARC • Do more than listen to your industry partner • Big outcomes requires a big team • More collaboration is better: in-kind and IP • Multiple partners is better • Be relevant • Now more than ever: National Priorities!
Going forward • Platform-based proposals • What IP do we have to leverage • Bigger collaborations • Include other departments at MQ • And their industry partners • National Priorities • Focus on relevance
