  2. WHAT IS COMMUNICATIONS? • Sometimes called telecommunications • Describes a process in which two or more computers or devices transfer data, instructions, and information. • Communicating technology allows us relay information more efficiently

  3. COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM • Consists of three components: • Transmitter • Channel • Receiver

  4. NETWORKING IN SCHOOLS • Used for three reasons: • To share hardware and software resources • Enable communications among schools and other organizations • Connect students and teachers to the internet

  5. HOW DOES THE INTERNET WORK? • Data is divided into small pieces called packets. • Packets travel over the internet via routers. • At the destination, the packets are reassembled into the original message.

  6. WORLD WIDE WEB • Worldwide collection of electronic documents that have built-in hyperlinks to other related documents. • These links allow users to quickly jump from one page to another. • A web page is an electronic document viewed on the web.

  7. HOW A WEB PAGE WORKS • Web pages contain text, graphics, video, and sound. • Hypertext • Hypermedia • Three types of hyperlinks: • Target • Relative • Absolute

  8. WEB BROWSER SOFTWARE • Web browser- a program that interprets HTML and displays Web pages and enables you to link to other Web pages and Web sites.

  9. WEB SEARCH TOOLS • Search tools- enable users to locate information found at Web sites all over the world. • Search engine • Subject directory

  10. MULTIMEDIA PRODUCTS AVAILABLE ON THE WEB • Multimedia- the combination of graphics, annimation, audio, video, and virtual reality. • Brings Web page to life • Makes internet more entertaining place to explore

  11. INTERNET SERVICES • Email • Newsgroups • Chat rooms • Instant messaging

  12. EDUCATIONAL IMPLICATIONS • Information • Entertainment • Business

  13. CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET • Dial up • Cable modem • DSL • Satellite modem
