  1. A Value-Based ApproachtoSelecting Your Career

  2. Do you like what you are good at? One of the greatest misfortunes in life is to be good at something you don’t like. • You may be proficient in Math… but you may think it is incredibly boring • You may be a competent HR manager or a reputable attorney… busy interacting with people every day, but actually you love a life of solitude and contemplation.

  3. It is important to distinguish between… What is important to you (values) What you like to do (interests) How you act (personality traits) What you are good at (skills, proficiency, competence)

  4. If you want to enjoy harmony in WORK-LIFE BALANCE, Your choice of career should revolve around four factors: SKILLS INTERESTS PERSONALITY VALUES

  5. V*I*P*S WHICH OF THESE CATEGORIES IS THE MOST DIFFICULT TO “UNCOVER”?

  6. VALUES Core beliefs which guide you and motivate you to act They are developed early in life They are very resistant to change They are influenced by the people who are important to us

  7. Compare VIPS: VALUES are INTRINSIC Interests can be developed Personalities can change Skills can be learned Core values are more permanent. You can compromise them, But you cannot change them.

  8. Discovering What YOU Value… Values are answers to the question Keep asking WHY questions until you reach a point where you no longer want something for the sake of something else…

  9. Why are you going to graduate school? “To get my MBA” Why do you want an MBA? “To gain qualifications” Why do you want to gain qualifications? “To succeed in my career” Why do you want to succeed? “I want to advance and move to the top” Why do you want to be at the top? “I want to have power” Why do you want power? “I want to control people” Why? “I LIKE CONTROL”

  10. CONTROL for the sake of CONTROL! You value CONTROL. • Do you want to get married? • Why? • “Because everyone gets married” [conformance] • “Because I want to have a life partner” [security] • “Because my parents want me to” [obedience] • “Because I want to feel loved” [companionship/love] • “Because I need to pass on the family name” [honor]

  11. Value-Mismatch can be the cause of many dilemmas in your life. • Mismatch in your plans to marry? • Similarly, what may happen if you • do not consider your values • when planning your career?

  12. Imagine a career that… Enables you to utilize your best skills, Involves what you enjoy doing, Blends well with your personality, And is in sync with your values!

  13. Work ~ Life Imbalance Young people often enter careers which never offer them true inner happiness or fulfillment. They may be successful, or appear outwardly happy… BUT ARE THEY REALLY? CHOOSE YOUR CAREER CAREFULLY!

  14. It’s Time to Think About The Real You!
