  1. The ILC IR John Amann ILC Mechanical Engineering 09/12/06

  2. IR Requirements Comparison Table Amann –09/12/06

  3. About Cranes • Cranes >100t are custom engineered = $$$. • Cranes <100t are off the shelf standard = $. • Cranes have a duty rating = +/- $. • Crane support structure cost scales with capacity. • A 400t crane will require a support structure and foundation on the scale of a steel mill = $$$. Amann –09/12/06

  4. SLC Collider Hall 100 ton Bridge Crane Hook Height = Runway Height 5-10m Additional Clearance Needed Above Runway Amann –09/12/06

  5. SLC Collider Hall 100 ton Bridge Crane Bridge Crane has an Effective Area Due to Size of Trolley and Cross Beam 100 ton > Effective Area > 400 ton Amann –09/12/06

  6. PEPII IR2 50 ton Bridge Crane Amann –09/12/06

  7. About Curtain Walls • It has been proposed to use a single collider hall separated into two detector regions by a removable 3m concrete wall. • In order to accomplish this, a combination of stacked concrete blocks topped with a retractable curtain wall will be required. Amann –09/12/06

  8. PEPII IR2 Curtain Wall Curtain Wall Fully Retracted Into IR Hall Amann –09/12/06

  9. PEPII IR2 Curtain Wall • Curtain walls need a runway. • Runway rail is embedded into concrete support. • To maintain small gap between curtain wall and the IR hall surfaces the bridge crane runway should be embedded and not a freestanding steel structure. • The above will require a IR hall with a robust concrete structure. • In general, a curtain wall will require a smooth finished IR cavern to maintain a small gap between the curtain wall and the IR hall walls and ceiling. Amann –09/12/06

  10. PEPII IR2 Curtain Wall Close-up of Runway Support Structure Amann –09/12/06

  11. IR Hall and Surface Assembly Building Cutaway View of IR Hall/Surface Assembly Building Amann –09/12/06

  12. IR Hall and Surface Assembly Building Right Side View Amann –09/12/06

  13. Other IR Hall Needs • Compressed Air - need required PSI, CFM, moisture content, locations • H2O supply – potable, non-potable • AC Power Distribution – welding sockets 500 amp, other 480/240V sockets. • Machine Shop, Welding Area, and Tool Crib • VESDA and Fire Suppression • IR Hall Lighting • O2 Deficiency Monitors • Clean Room – how big, what class? • Materials Storage Area Amann –09/12/06

  14. Questions to Think About • IR Hall - rectangular box or curved cavern? • Surface assembly building - size and orientation? • BDS tunnel height above IR Hall floor – what constrains this? • Curtain Wall – required thickness? Amann –09/12/06
