  1. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS If you feel unsafe in any situation, go with your gut.

  2. DON’T DO SOMETHING YOU WILL REGRET Your parents and friends will probably hear about the crazy thing you did, and Facebook pictures could be uploaded before you know it, so be cautious of crazy behavior that is unlike yourself.

  3. STICK WITH YOUR FRIENDS When you are out with your friends, arrive together, check in together, and leave together. Do not wander off alone!

  4. MAKE A SECRET SIGNAL WITH FRIENDS Let your friends know when to intervene when a situation is making you uneasy or if you are worried about someone’s safety.

  5. PROTECT YOUR LOCATION ON FACEBOOK/TWITTER Be aware of the risks of sharing your location. Adjust your privacy settings and use your best judgment when “checking-in”. Also be cautious of personal information in tweets with #SpringBreak or #SB2013

  6. MAKE A PLAN Establish a meeting spot before going out for the night, know the address of the hotel and identify a safe way to return before you go out. Always let others know if you go out on your own, where you are going, and when you’ll be back.

  7. DON’T LET YOUR GUARD DOWN (EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE RELAXING) Your destination city is still a city filled with strangers, treat it as you would any other unknown environment. Don’t assume that someone you’ve met is looking out for your best interests. Spring break visitors can often be targets of crime from locals.

  8. PRACTICE SAFE DRINKING Don’t accept drinks from people you don’t know or trust. Never leave your drink unattended, and if you do lose sight of it, get a new one. Always watch your drink being prepared and when possible, buy drinks in bottles.

  9. INTERVENE Don’t be afraid to intervene if a situation seems questionable. If you see someone acting aggressively, speak up. By getting involved, you could prevent someone from becoming the victim of sexual violence.

  10. CALL HOME Let someone at home know when you arrive safely and check in every few days to keep worry from setting in. Make sure you keep them updated of any serious situations or things that you encounter.

  11. AVOID BEING ALONE OR ISOLATED WITH SOMEONE YOU DON’T KNOW OR TRUST If someone you don’t know or trust asks you to go somewhere alone, let him or her know that you want to stay with the group. Use any excuse you can think of to leave the situation if you do find yourself alone.

  12. BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS Check out your surroundings before you go out and learn a well-lit route back to your hotel or rental property. Avoid putting music headphones in both ears so you can be aware of what’s going on around you. Be alert at all times.

  13. BE PREPARED Always carry emergency cash and keep phone numbers for a local cab company handy. Ask the concierge for a business card with the hotel address. Always have a charged cell phone with you and make sure it works in your destination location.

  14. IN THE HOTEL Reserve a room above 1st floor, but below 6th (1st floor is easier to break into, and some fire ladders can only reach the 6th floor) If safes are provided, use them for valuables! Keep doors and windows locked Don’t let anyone into your room that you don’t know

  15. AT THE ATM Always go to the ATM as a group Do a full 360 turn when arrive at the ATM to notice suspicious behavior Use one hand to cover the keypad when punching in your number Have your wallet/purse ready to put the cash directly in so that others can not see the amount

  16. IF DRINKING Party smart & be responsible Pace yourself Be sure you eat & drink water while consuming alcohol Know the liquor laws of your destination Designate a driver who does not consume alcohol Call a cab if your Designated Driver is intoxicated

  17. ON THE BEACH Drinking + Sun = BAD sunburn & an even worse hangover Stay hydrated and drink lots of water Find shade if feeling lightheaded Use sunscreen of at least SPF 15 and reapply often Avoid being out during the hottest hours of the day when the sun’s rays are strongest.

  18. WHILE SWIMMING Always have a lifeguard Stay within designated swimming areas Swim with a buddy Always re-apply sunscreen after getting out of the water

  19. IN THE HOT TUB Don’t mix alcohol and hot tubing(alcohol can dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure to dangerous levels, the effects of alcohol are felt sooner and stronger in a hot tub where body temperature is raised) Be cautious of strangers getting too close or making you uncomfortable, a cramped hot tub is no excuse for being creepy

  20. GOING OUT Stick with friends Look out for others and help intoxicated people to get home Lookout for predators Monitor each others alcohol intake

  21. HOOKING UP BE SAFE Stock up on protection before you leavehome Set limits and boundaries with yourself and make them known quickly to potential hook ups (“Hey good lookin’, I’ve had fun this evening, but no sex tonight”)

  22. GOING CRUISIN’ Be careful to always lock your door Stick with friends Watch your pockets when you get off the boat in touristy locations Be cautious of the deck that may be windy or wet during the trip Wear sunscreen while walking around the open areas of the ship

  23. ON THE ROAD Get the car checked out prior to the trip Buckle up Take turns driving Never pick up hitchhikers Shotgun rider is in charge of keeping the driver awake Check drivers licenses and vehicle registration before leaving If you have car trouble, call the police and lock your doors, be wary of people who stop to help
