Facts • There are 531 665 people living in county Down. • C S Lewis and his wife Joy spent 2 weeks of their honeymoon in The Old Inn in Crawfordsburn. • Killyleagh Castle in county Down is the oldest castle that is occupied in Ireland, it was built in the 13th century. • Down was the first area in the north to be taken over by the Normans.

Geography • Down touches Loch Neagh on the south-east shore. • Down covers about an area of 2448km. • Down is in the province of Ulster. • Newry is the county town of Down. • The Mourne mountains are in the north of Down and are one of the most beautiful places in Ireland. • The highest point in Ireland is Slieve Donard in county Down which is 2796 ft. • Strangford Loch is a popular tourist attraction and is also known for its fishing. • The river Lagan rises on Slieve Croob and flows north through Lisbon and Belfast and into Belfast Lough.

Sport • Gareth Thornton is currently the manager for the Down senior Gaelic football team. • Royal county Down Golf Club was founded in 1898. • It has 36 holes in total ,it is a championship course ,and in 2005 it was rated the fourth best golf course in the world. • The sports that are played in county Down include basketball, football, GAA, rugby, athletics, swimming, sailing, cricket and hockey.

History • Around 400AD the Fiatach controlled Louth and Down also parts of Armagh and Tyrone. • Saint Patrick landed in east county Down in 432AD,and built his first church in Saul. • It is said that St Patrick is buried in the grounds of Downpatrick Cathedral. • During the early 800’s Down was attacked many times by the Vikings.
