  18. Mutual Ministry • Background • The Mutual Ministry model was developed in several remote dioceses in the Episcopal Church as a response to the problem of finding and financing seminary trained clergy. • On the way towards solving a practical problem, a solid example of baptismal ministry was discovered.

  19. Mutual Ministry • In Short • In the next few years there will be a core group in each of those five parishes who have undergone extensive and intensive formation, and who will be serving as priests, deacons, catechists, ministers of Christian Worship, lay preachers, etc.

  20. Mutual Ministry • In Short • In the next few years there will be a core group in each of those five parishes who have undergone extensive and intensive formation, and who will be serving as priests, deacons, catechists, ministers of Christian Worship, lay preachers, etc. • As group (lay and ordained) these people will serve as ‘rector’ or ‘associate rector’ under the leadership and direction of the Area Missioner and Bishops.

  23. Regional Youth Ministry • Five years ago, none of the churches in Allegany County had • the capability to run a sustainable youth ministry program (with the exception of Emmanuel). • Out of a creative partnership between the laity of Holy Cross, Cumberland and St. James, Westernport emerged the idea of pooling resources and youth to have a regional youth ministry.

  32. Collaborative Christian Formation • A new idea: St. Peter’s, Lonaconing; St. John’s, Frostburg; and St. George’s, Mount Savage are sharing a Christian Education and Formation program.

  33. Collaborative Christian Formation • A new idea: St. Peter’s, Lonaconing; St. John’s, Frostburg; and St. George’s, Mount Savage are sharing a Christian Education and Formation program. • Realizing that the clergy in the three parishes have different gifts, and the people in the parishes have different interests and needs, we joined together to offer a greater variety of formation opportunities.

  34. Collaborative Christian Formation • We published a ‘catalog’ of short courses which was distributed to all three parishes, and was published in the local newspaper.

  35. Collaborative Christian Formation • We published a ‘catalog’ of short courses which was distributed to all three parishes, and was published in the local newspaper. • People from the various parishes can then decide which courses they would like to be a part of.

  36. Collaborative Christian Formation • We published a ‘catalog’ of short courses which was distributed to all three parishes, and was published in the local newspaper. • People from the various parishes can then decide which courses they would like to be a part of. • This fall we had a course on the Bible and Prayer Book at Mount Savage; a course on the most disturbing texts of the Bible at Frostburg; and a course on evangelism at Lonaconing.

  37. • An explicit expectation is that every parishioner will partake in at least one course in a year. Because they meet at different places, on different days, and at different times of the day, just about everyone can fit one in their schedule.

  38. Collaborative Christian Formation • We’re also publishing the ‘home grown’ courses on the internet in PDF format so that even people who can’t make the course time and day can at least check them out: • See: www.frostburg.ang-md.org Christian Education • Or: www.stpeters.ang-md.org  Christian Education

  39. Collaborative Christian Formation • The hope is that we can add the participation of other parishes in the region into this endeavor, so that all Christian Education offerings could be cataloged and offered to every parishioner in at least Allegany County.

  40. 41. Cooperative Evangelism • St. Peter’s, Lonaconing and St. John’s, Frostburg received a • grant from the diocesan grants committee (about $7,000) • to undergo a cooperative evangelism project.
