  2. A. History / Background • 1. Beginnings of youth ministry in Korea • 1954,  IMCS was begun in Korea for the first time. • 1961, KYCS(Korea Young Catholic Student) was started • 1978, the Association of Sunday School Teachers in Seoul Archdiocese was started the starts of youth ministry organizations in other dioceses were followed.

  3. A. History / Background • 2. People / organizations / movements instrumental in raising awareness on the need to minister to young people • People/movements : YCW (Young Christian Workers) movement and the people of the movement have many effects on our youth ministry.

Key events in the history of youth ministry • The beginningof KYCS in 1961. • The Document of the Bicentennial anniversary of the founding of Catholic Church in Korea in 1984 : The related matters of youth ministry was included in.  • The white paper of Sunday School in 1986 • The start of Young Adult Ministry Association at several dioceses in 1996 : From then, there were many training courses and seminars for young adult minister formation on diocesan level. 

  8. A. History / Background • 3. Key events in the history of youth ministry • The 1st SYD(Seoul Youth Day) in 1996 : It was the first time that such a large-scale catholic youth gathering on archdiocesan level was held. After that, other diocese have held this kind of youth gathering.

Key events in the history of youth ministry • YMC(Youth Mini Community) movement, 1996~ : The spirit of that movement is based on YCW and BEC, is not the way to passive learning, is focused on sharing faith and life. Now this YMC spirit is spread to other dioceses. 

  10. A. History / Background • 3. Key events in the history of youth ministry • The beginning of CYA(Catholic Youth Action) in 2000 : It was the first time that the formal organization consists of teens!

  11. A. History / Background • 3. Key events in the history of youth ministry • The first Youth Minister Formation Workshop in Seoul archdiocese have been started in 1997 by a committed priest. After that, this workshop was expanded to national level for priests, sisters, and lay ministers.

Key events in the history of youth ministry • Diocesan Synods from 2000's (6 dioceses - Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Suwon, Daegu, Cheongju) : The activation of youth ministry became an important bill in most dioceses.  • The Start of Youth Ministry Committee in CBCK(Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea) in 2005.

  13. A. History / Background • 3. Key events in the history of youth ministry • The 1st KYD (Korean Youth Day) in 2007 : It was the first catholic youth gathering on national level on which all the bishops in Korea showed their interest.

  14. A. History / Background • 4. Challenges / Difficulties encountered along the way • To Enter universityis a great concern for many parents of young people in Korea. Naturally, their interest for the Christian faith education is not considerable.

  15. A. History / Background • 4. Challenges / Difficulties encountered along the way • Young people can easily get entertainment in abundance from the world. So, the Church cannot attract the youth. Nevertheless, the Church has not found yet a effective way to invite them.

  16. B. Vision - Mission • 1. The direction of youth ministry in Korea We are trying some various ways. Before, the Sunday school was nearly only one means for the Youth Ministry, now we are in the period of change. YMC(Youth Mini Community) was one of the new trials. And actually there is some actions to suppose a direction for youth ministry. Our Youth Ministry Directory is being prepared.

Vision - Mission -- Prayer for Youth Ministry in Korea -- † 주님, 청소년에게 유혹을 극복할 의지와 내일에 대한 희망을 주시고, 그리스도의 십자가 앞으로 청소년을 모아들이는 데 저희의 열정(젊음)을 바치게 하소서. <성모송> 청소년의 도움이신 마리아, 저희와 청소년 사목을 위하여 빌어주소서. 성 요한 보스코, 저희와 청소년 사목을 위하여 빌어주소서. 하느님의 종 죠셉 까르딘 저희와 청소년 사목을 위하여 빌어주소서. 영광이 성부와 성자와 성령께 처음과 같이 이제와 항상 영원히. 아멘. †Lord, Grant young people the desire to overcome temptation, and hope for a better future. Let us commit our youthfulness (passion) to inviting them before the cross of the Christ. Amen. <Hail Mary> Holy Mary, the help of young people, Pray for us and youth ministry. How it is linked with the overall vision of the Catholic Church in Korea • There is a effort to follow the vision of the 2nd Vatican Council (Youth Evangelization, Youth as subject of Peer Evangelization - Apostolicam Actuositatem article 23) John = the passion of Youth Ministry Peter = the authority of Church - 브르낭 “무덤으로 달려가는 두 제자”-

  21. C. Planning • 1. The process in vision-building, planning and implementation of programs and activities Korean Catholic Church has not yet established a Vision of the national level. But by means of synod, each diocese has been executing programs. For this purpose, we follow the universal synodal process like gathering the opinions (participation of all the church members), setting a direction of diocesan ministry, implementation, and evaluation. • 2. Key players Generally, each diocese(diocesan offices) is moving as key players.

Programs / activities available for the youth in Korea according to different purposes • Evangelization : Biblical Study and Workshop(of Young adults) • Catechesis : Sunday school in parishes • Spirituality : Taizé prayer meeting, Youth Legio Mariae • Fellowship(Community): various activities in the parish, club activities

Links • How our office is linked with other commissions / agencies / institutions • Youth Ministry Committee in Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea has a regular meeting of youth ministry directors of each diocese. • Youth Minister Formation is opening annually for youth minister from all the country since 1997 by Hatsal (Sunshine) Youth Ministry Center. • Almost all the offices and the organizations have their web site which help them communicating and networking each other.
