  2. BASIC PREPARATIONS BEFORE YOU GO FOR A KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY Are you planning for a knee replacement? If yes, then why not start preparing for it which will help you in a better result? It will help you to recover in an easier and faster way.

  3. Planning early can help you a lot. Well, if you haven’t marked your calendar yet, that’s ok.But it’s important to think about the effects which will be caused by the operation. You are going to live a stressful stage of life at least for a week after the surgery for joint replacement. It is recommended to prepare now for a smooth surgery and faster recovery. Consult your doctor and raise your queries. Collect information specifically about all the head-scratching questions. Ask him about the duration of the surgery. If you can have surgery as an outpatient, avoiding the stay at the hospital. Ask him about the type of anaesthesia you need. The type of rehab and every assistive device that you are going to use at home after treatment should be known to you. Ask him if you should bank blood prior to the surgical procedure? What is the duration you are likely to be off work? Note down all. It is suggested to go for a trusted friend’s or any family member’s company while going for the appointment.

  4. Move and lose it Have a look after your shape and try to get it better before surgery. A physically fit person recovers more quickly. Ask your surgeon and get some exercises recommended for you to do before the treatment. Say, for example, movement of your arms and the upper body parts will make it easier to get around on a walker or crutches. A heavy individual is suggested to lose some weight before surgery in order to lighten the stress on the knees. Quit smoking Stop or quit it, if you use any tobacco products like cigarettes. You may face a longer recovery as smoking slows down the rate of recovery and your wounds will take longer to heal. Apart from this. Smoking even increases the chances of infection and complications during as well as post-surgery. Practice It is recommended to learn and go for the physical therapy exercises which you will need later. Once you get used to it before surgery, it will be easier for you to perform them later. You should also test drive the walker and crutches if you will need them.

  5. Jot it down There are chances that your same medical and insurance information will be asked over and again. It’s recommended to carry a file of documents listed below. Any health conditions you have All medication and supplements you have. Names and contact numbers of your doctors Your insurance policy and membership numbers Persons to contact in any case of emergency Line up help At the time of recovery, you are going to need it. In case you live on your own, it is suggested to ask a relative, family member or a close friend to stay with you for some days. You can also take help from your neighbour for taking out your garbage. Stock up your pantry or freeze extra meals before heading to the hospital.

  6. Get your home ready Get things closer to your place of rest so as to make it easier to access those when you are less mobile. There can be a need for a temporary bedroom on the ground or first floor. Make space in your hallways and make ways for your crutches or your walker. Installing safety handrails in the bathroom is also recommended. Keep all your necessary usable at the nearest possible place. Follow your doctor’s instructions for a few days prior to surgery. Maintain your daily routine according to him. He might ask you to stop some of your medical courses, mostly those which are likely to bleed you more while in the surgery procedure.
