The YMCA-YWCA Mission • The National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA is a charitable, voluntary, community based association dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, youth, adults and families through programs that build spirit, mind and body. • The National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA provides opportunities for personal growth and character development by providing unique and contemporary programs for everyone regardless of race, religion, creed, ability or economic circumstance.

YMCA-YWCA History • Founded in Ottawa in 1867 • YMCA & YWCA amalgamated in 1964 • Provider of licensed child care since 1890 – largest in Canada • In 1942 started Carleton University • Founding member of United Way • First to introduce residence camping in Eastern Ontario • Employment Counselling Centres open in 2002 • Job Connects opens in 2005 at NCR Y • ECC and JC fuse and become YEAC in 2010

Y Employment Enterprise and Newcomer Services (EEN) • Employment Access Centres (EAC) • Enterprise Centre: • Ontario Self-Employment Benefit Program (SEB) • Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program (FPSYIP) • Kanata Employment Resource Centre (KERC) • Language Assessment and Referral Centre (LARC) • Newcomer Information Centre (NIC) • Youth Gambling Awareness Project (YGAP)

What is the Y Employment Access Centre? • The YEAC is an employment program that offers FREE services to job seekers and employers • YEAC is an Employment Ontario program funded by the Ontario government • Offers a variety of interventions to assist Ontarians with obtaining sustainable employment • Provides various services to employers who are licensed to operate in Ontario

  6. The Components of Employment Services 1) Information & Referrals 2) Job Search 3) Job Matching, Placement & Incentives 4) Job/Training Retention

Information & Referral (I&R) • Free public resource centres • Access to current job postings • Computers with Internet access and résumé software • Faxing, printing, phone and photocopier • Various employment related workshops • Apprenticeship program information • Information and referral to various community programs • Resumé critiquing and interview preparation • Participation in large Career Fairs • Distribution of job postings by email • *there is no eligibility criteria for these services

  8. Job Search/Employment Consultation • Eligibility Criteria: • Not in full-time school/training (more than 20 hours/week) • Unemployed or working less than 20 hours/week • Eligible to work in Canada • Resident of Ontario

Job Search • Individualized support and meetings with an Employment Consultant • Assistance and coaching in resumé development, job search and networking strategies, interview preparation, career exploration and more • Clarification on employment and training needs • Establish short and long term goals • Develop an Employment Service Plan • Support and referral with Second Career and other funded MTCU programs • Access to the Ottawa Job Match Network* • *for those who qualify

How to Register or Refer • The Resource Centre works on a walk-in basis • Call or email to register for workshops • There is an Employment Consultant available for drop-in intakes everyday on a first-come first-served basis • Employment Consultants will refer clients to the most appropriate service • It is possible to set up specific appointments by phone or email

Formal Referrals • YEAC makes official referrals to the following programs/agencies: • OSEB-Ontario Self Employment Benefits program • JCP-Job Creation Partnerships program • SC-Second Career / FeePayer / Long Tenured Workers • The Practice Firms (Experica or Canadart) • LBS-Literacy and Basic Skills • Acclaim Ability Management • Ontario March of Dimes • Causeway Work Centre • Canadian Hearing Society (Job Development)

Job Matching, Placement & Incentives • Individual support from a Job Developer with job search, networking, etc. • Information on Health and Safety in the workplace and Workers’ Rights • Help matching job seekers’ skills and interests with job opportunities • Support with securing apprenticeship • Possibility of Apprenticeship scholarship • Possibility of on-the-job training placements • Help with identifying and resolving workplace barriers

  13. Job/Training Retention • Support for long-term attachment or advancement in the labour force • Access to mentors and coaches • Monitoring of mentor/coach relationship • Development of a support plan to enhance employability and job retention • Monitoring and follow-up of work placements

Services for Employers • Free distribution and advertisement of job postings • Pre-screened candidates for positions • Sensitivity and diversity training • Possible wage/training subsidy for new hires • Matching of apprentices • Possibility of Apprenticeship Signing Bonus • Monitoring of placements during/after • Time and money saved • Space for hosting of information sessions or interviews • Participation in large Career Fairs

  18. Ontario Self Employment Benefit Program • Financial assistance provided to eligible participants for a fixed period of time while starting a new business • Access to business related seminars and one-on-one support from a business consultant • Referral required, possible through the YEAC

  19. Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program • Gain practical work experience through a paid internship and placement with a mentor for youth within the Federal government • Receive one-on-one support from an Employment Counsellor during the internship

  20. Kanata Employment Resource Centre • Employment resource centre with information on labour market, apprenticeships, retraining and community services • Workshops facilitated include Resume Writing, Job Search and Interview Techniques along with Employer Information Sessions

Language Assessment & Referral Centre • Language Assessments in English or French, based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) • Referrals to language training in English or French, such as LINC/CLIC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada), ELT/CLNA (Enhanced Language Training) and OSLT/FLAP (Occupation Specific Language Training) • Depending on eligibility, access to FREE childcare, transportation allowance, full time and part time classes, beginner to advanced levels as well as employment focused language training and programs

  22. Newcomer Information Centre • Information and referral services for newcomers to Canada • Resource Centre with access to computers, community information, events and announcements • Multilingual staff and community settlement specialists on site • Various workshops and information sessions facilitated by NIC staff, community partners and leaders, professional associations and employers

  23. Youth Gambling Awareness Program • Prevention and education programs to help promote awareness of possible harm associated with gambling • Community awareness outreach in various settings • Referral to treatment services
