  1. Systems Engineering Sound Transit – Peter Brown FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 |SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

  2. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON Why systems engineering is important How systems engineering integral to project success What the application of a systems engineering approach entails

  3. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON Why is systems engineering important? Because the capability of the systems we are delivering, and the nature of the components with which they are comprised, are changing so fast that the approach and processes we have historically used to manage them are no longer suitable.

  8. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON Why is systems engineering important? August 27-28, 2019 Increasing complexity of systems Enhanced functionality Technical capability of devices Integration of previously independent systems System Interfaces Electro mechanical interfaces being replaced with digital technology, software and networked communications interfaces

  9. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON Why is systems engineering important? August 27-28, 2019 Technology greatly expands solution system options Many alternative functionality and performance options Greater need for project definition to understand operational context, needs and constraints

  10. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON “System of Systems” August 27-28, 2019 • Systems that were traditionally developed to meet a specific or discrete operating need… • Are being integrated into systems of systems that deliver enhanced capabilities more valuable than the sum of their individual parts… • Complexity emerges through greater interdependency between systems…and diffused ownership of systems across the enterprise

  11. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON [Two Content] Slide Title

  12. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON How is systems engineering integral to project success?

  13. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON How is Systems Engineering integral to project success August 27-28, 2019 Helps deliver system performance that meets customer and end user expectations It mitigates risk associated with capital program activities that are always on the critical path Detailed and complete definition and control of physical and functional interfaces – fewer late changes Helps ensure interoperability of new and legacy systems Supports more orderly and timely transition to operations

  14. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON How is Systems Engineering integral to project success August 27-28, 2019 Complimentary to system safety assurance and certification processes Complimentary to transit asset management goals Architecting solutions with maintainability and obsolescence in mind Reduced total cost of ownership

  15. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON What does the application of a systems engineering approach entail? August 27-28, 2019

  16. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON Systems Engineering Defined "An interdisciplinary approach to translating users' needs into the definition of a system, its architecture and design through an iterative process that results in an effective operational system.  Systems engineering applies over the entire lifecycle, from concept development to final disposal." Source:  Committee on Pre-milestone A Systems Engineering, 2009, Pre-milestone A and Early-phase System Engineering: A retrospective review and benefits for Future Air Force acquisition, the National Acadamies Press.

  17. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON What does the application of systems engineering practice entail? August 27-28, 2019 Systems thinking Broad perspectives Entire life cycle Agency before project Requirements management Concept of operations and maintenance Informed by systems thinking Started early through meaningful engagement with all stakeholders and logically distilled from conceptual to detailed technical requirements

  18. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON What does the application of systems engineering practice entail? August 27-28, 2019 Human centered design Designers and developers need to seek the users’ perspective Plan for iterative improvements that make things work well for people

  19. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON What does the application of systems engineering practice entail? August 27-28, 2019 Robust systems integration capability Identification and definition of interfaces Controlling them throughout development Testing them in the factory Verifying and validating them in the field Requires owners to use contract documents to obligate prime contractors, subcontractors and suppliers to bring the right systems capability and engage early in systems engineering activities

  20. FTA TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AUGUST 27 – 28, 2019 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON August 27-28, 2019 Thank you! Pete Brown Director of Systems Engineering & Integration 206-903-7473 Peter.brown@soundtransit.org
