  1. Resume Writing • Back to Basics! • Presenter: Carmen WongPrepared By: Fatma Aidarus

Start with Objective/ Profile • Here we outline what we are looking for, job-wise or what our objective/ main aim is... • think of it like an essay topic that summarizes the basis of your paper, much like how you plan to capture your reader when writing your resume • For example, your objective [i.e for customer service position] would be: “A full-time summer employment that will enable me to fully utilize my work experience, strong organizational skills, educational background, and to better improve customer satisfaction.”

  3. Skills • Skills comes after you list your objectives. Then again, it can be written after your work experience -you decide :-) • Skills: should outline your skills that you have acquired through previous work experiences, general knowledge and or education... • This part is where you may list you knowledge in languages [if more than one], your computer skills [software knowledge,wpm etc..], summary of skills ie communication, listening etc.... • Keep it short and straight to the point [can be in point form]

Outlining your Experience • This is where you list your work experiences • Work experiences could be paid and/ unpaid [where you got paid or not should not discount the fact that you gained valuable work experience] • List the work experience in order of the most recent to the latest • Try to not separate your volunteer from your paid work experience; you may separate the two [paid vs volunteer/unpaid] when:- • a/ asked by the employer [on the job description, which is highly unlikely] • b/ you happen to have a lot of paid work experience that are more current and that is aligned with the job you are applying for. • **** In any case: mix them up so that you increase your chances of getting the job. After all, volunteer work counts as work experience as well...

Work Experience cont’d • When listing work experience, make sure you indicate your position [or the role you held], followed by the place [company/organization] followed by the location [city, province] and finally the time [from when you held the position to when you finished working there/ or if you still hold the position/job there, it should read something like: August 2008- currently] • To sketch an idea of the above, this is how it should appear:-Cashier, Home Depot; Toronto, ON — 2009 - currently • Onceyou have indicated the above, then you highlight what skills you have obtained from that role [what skills did you get from your experience as a cashier?] • You may list these skills in a bullet form right below the title role/company [see above for example].

Work Experience cont’d • It should look something like this:-Cashier, Home Depot; Toronto, ON — 2009 - currently- Excellent customer services through being of assistance to customer at first hand, being resourceful and answering to enquiries and providing the customers with retail deals or current deals- Strong Communication & Listening skills as well as conflict management through addressing customers concerns in the most effective and careful manner- Effective management of sales and cash handling through cashier duties and closing/opening registers

  7. Work Experience cont’d • Repeat this format of listing your work experiences [ till you list all work experiences that apply to the job position]

  8. Highlight your Education • There are two ways to do this: You may write this part of your resume beforeORafter your work experience • Since you are a student, it is advisable that you write your educational status/background BEFORE your work experience ...

  9. Resume cont’d • Your education should look something like this:- EducationYork University, North York, Ontario — BSc- Psychology [Honors] - Candidate, 2012 **** Of course, this is just a sample/ an idea of how it should look like...

  10. Resume cont’d • I always write this at the very bottom of my resume [something to do with my REFERENCES]... • You need not worry about listing all your references on the resume. In fact, it is probably better if you DO NOT list your references on your resume!!! • So instead, simply say :- [in Bold/Capitalized writing]REFERENCES ARE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST

  11. Optional Part - List of Courses • You have the option to list courses that is aligned to the job you are applying for.... For instance, if you are applying in a job related to Data analysis, Statistic I & II or Research Methods will help strengthen your application [if you have taken them...] • Also, when you list the courses you have taken, write a two-liner or a short description not more than 2 lines on the course!! • See next slide for the resume format [basic format]

Format • Divided into:- • Header e.g. "RE: Internship Opportunity at CAMH"e.g. "Dear Hiring Manager" • Introduction - briefly states the position that you are applying for [e.g. Please accept this letter as application for the customer service representative position at Indigo Chapter, Eaton Centre Location. - should be not more than 3-4 lines- is aimed to catch the reader/hiring manager’s eye [be strong, confident and straight to the point] e.g I believe that I am a perfect candidate for this position _ _ _ _ _ .

Cover Letter cont’d • Body - highlights or amplifies what you have covered in your resume- Also ties into the job requirements/descriptions to the skills you specified in your resume - need to answer why you should be considered for this position [list your qualifications!] • closing- Sums up the letter- similar to essay, you restate your thesis/ subject line/ cover letter into- Be positive [i.e write that you welcome the opportunity of discussing this further with the manager...] etc
