  5. Communication / Language • Roughly 6,500 languages are spoken in the world. (2,000 have less than 1,000 speakers) • World’s Largest Languages • Mandarin Chinese • Spanish • English • Arabic

  6. Gender and Age Roles • What do males or men do in the society? • What do females or women do in the society? • How are young men and women “trained” to fill their roles in society? • What role does age play in the society?

  7. Relationships and Families • How do people meet, date and marry? • What is expected of gender roles in the relationship? • What role does age play in relationships? • How are families constituted? Extended family roles? • What is expected of family size and connections?

  8. Code of Conduct / Laws • What is expected in behavior? • How do you interact with those around you? • How are laws made, enforced and conducted?

  9. Personal Appearance • How should you dress or look to fit in? • What type of jewelry and make up is acceptable or encourage?

  10. Religion and Belief Systems • What is the primary belief system of the society? • What religious affiliation is the primary or accepted religion of choice? • What impact does that religion have on the rest of society?

  11. Customs and Behavior • What are common modes of behavior? • What are the ways that people are expected to behave? (Cultural Norms)

Cultural Kaleidoscope • Each of us in our own way blends each of these cultural aspect together to form our own identity. • Cultures are not wrong or right… • Understanding cultures does not mean that you agree with them. • Cultural awareness and acceptance are keys to being useful and productive in our society.
