  1. ALICE Task Force on LV Power Supplies (and Cables) G. Stefanini/CERN-EP Scope Some key technical issues Organisation and work programme Summary G. Stefanini/ALICE Forum

  2. Assess subdetector requirements and constraints Identify common problems susceptible of common solutions Evaluate risk, feasibility and cost of possible choices Validate components (COTS ?) and systems for cavern environment Choose/develop cables & cable cooling technique (if needed) Survey vendors (and home-made developments) Test prototypes Define specs & procurement plan Take advantage of similar developments in other LHC experiments Subdetectors remain responsible for final specs and integration Scope G. Stefanini/ALICE Forum

  3. Some key issues • Location • Floor & rack space • Cables type & length • Regulation at load • COTS (components off-the-shelf) • SEU effects possible even in low radiation fluence • Efficiency • Conversion efficiency • Power losses on cables • Reliability • Limited access • Grounding scheme • Controls • Procurement & installation timescale • Long-term maintenance G. Stefanini/ALICE Forum

  4. Each subdetector Appoint representative(s) Draft requirements document Inform of contacts/developments already under way One day workshop Status, problems, test results Resources needed, deadlines Feasibility of common solutions (if any) Prototypes specs, vendors survey Testing procedure definition, quality assurance, prototypes evaluation Link with other LHC experiment to take advantage of similar developments technical solutions, economy of scale Tentative estimate of this work programme: 12 months (max) Procurement (coordinated if possible) Task Force organisation and work plan G. Stefanini/ALICE Forum

  5. Aims Assess (common) requirements Share knowledge and experience Streamline vendor survey and procurement Assure conformity of testing procedures and controls Take advantage of similar developments elsewhere Duration Tentative estimate: 12 months max Responsibilities Subdetectors remain responsible for their technical specifications, the availability of resources to carry out the work programme, and the final implementation Summary G. Stefanini/ALICE Forum
